Why not just get an LT1 engine and manual tranny from a wrecked 4th gen? You will get the top end power (up to 6200?) and you will get decent "off the line". your fuel mileage will be good, and it will make a great daily driver as far as drivability goes. And you will have your six speed. What are you waiting for?

If you go LT-1, be sure to get all the accessories and stuff because they're reverse cooled. If you're wanting a economical performance package, look for a cam with less than 230 degrees intake advance, around .450 valve lift, and about a 112 degree lobe seperation. Also get some good headers and an aftermarket Weiland or Edelbrock intake. I run high 12s with my daily driver SS Monte Carlo with a 305 block. The only big mods were Comp roller rockers, Summit 1103 cam, ported & polished L98 aluminum Corvette heads, Flowtech headers, rebuilt & modified carb, Edelbrock intake, wider tires and Auburn lockup. Camaros hookup better than SSs (I had an 87 IROC-Z). You should easily get to 12s or 13s with these types of mods, and still afford to drive it. My SS gets 13 in the city and 22 on the highway with 3.73 gears!

I really wouldn't advise an lt1. Sure they made 30 more hp than a 90 tpi but for the much higher cost and complexity through in an L98 with some simple add ons. Plus many lt1 parts are more expensive and have limited head selection.
