Need help with rear hatch!

I have an 87 Camaro SC here iss my problem.I turned key and opend rear hatch now I cant get it to shut. The part that pulls the hatch closed is like stuck in the down position so it wont shut. There is the sound like a motor is running and wont shut off. I disconnected the battery and connected it back thinking this might help but no luck.Still have the motor sound. Pulled out [LID-fuse] that stopped motor sound.Any help to fix this please!

Usually what you can do is take the back trim panel off (its like 3 phillips head screws and then some of those thumb retaining screws). With the cover off, disconnect the motor harness, and adjust the mechanism so that it is all the way up. With that done, reconnect everything and then close the latch.

A lot of the time the mechanism will simply get out of alignment (from slamming too hard or if you try to close it with something blocking it). If it gets out of adjustment the motor will keep running until it burns out.

It will shut....just slam it down hard enough to compress the rubber. I had this happen once after my car was hit. The auto pulldown was broken, and would not come back up...so for a few weeks I had to really slam down the hatch to get it to catch. A lot easier than trying to dissasemble everything until you need to.

What has happened to me in the past is the motor gets pulled down. Look down into the slot and there should be a switch of some kind of switch that will raise the motor back up.

Same here... all it takes is a screwdriver, you'll find the lever. Hold the switch down enough for the hatch to pull itself all the way down and "click off", then remove the screwdriver, and the hatch will raise up again.

I know its been said twice, but for the love of *** try hitting that switch with a screwdriver first. It is often an easy fix for this. A couple years ago I didn't know about this yet and bought a $400 motor I didn't need from the dealer.

Wish I had seen this board when I first got my car and ran into this problem. Maybe I wouldn't have been riding around and gone over a bump and have the hatch fly up, talk about embarrasing. I even tied an extension cord from the hatch to a rod on the back seat to keep it from bouncing. Then one day just by fiddling with the motor I ran across that switch and wow it worked.
