Found one of the cheapest, most effective mods for a MAF car
Well i'm sure this has been discussed time and time again but i'd like to share my thoughts and back it up with track times
i had TPIS port my MAF for $40 and they claim a 30hp increase or so...which i never believe but for $40 it wasn't a bad deal because it wouldn't that much and i wouldn't screw it up. i thought maybe 15hp at most
i never really found out what the gains were because i put it on when i put the blower on
---Well now i have some results. I have a local friend with a thirdgen and i try to help him go as fast as possible for as little as possible to help him out, his car has become my new bolt on wonder car...LOL
he has a 1989 IROC with a redone jasper motor, so nice and fresh. He has a bad cat and has some enormous back pressure issues going on because the car is down A LOT of MPH and A LOT of ET.
he's been running consistent 15.1s-15.2s because of about 30lbs of backpressure from the cat plugging up the exhaust.
So i figured this would be a good test to just "see" what a bigger inlet "might" do with the ported MAF (the ported MAF has no screens and the fins are cut down)
---So he goes for a pass today and runs his usual 15.1 or so
i have him put on the ported MAF and with ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER CHANGES the car went
14.8
....that is a buonafide 3 tenth increase which equates to about 30hp. i couldn't believe.
He also backed it up with a 14.94 i believe too, but he spun a little on that one
*******NOTE: His 60' foot times on the 15.1 and 14.8 pass were ALMOST IDENTICAL
2.00
2.01
i believe....so there is no argueing that a better 60' got him the extra tenths
----So, in conclusion, for you do it yourselfers...go port your own MAF and see what happens. I'm sure if you get a nice day like we had today mid 50s and sunny (slight headwind though
) you *should* see some similar results
LET THE FLAMES/BULL**** POSTS BEGIN
-A lot of people on this board know me and i dont lie about stuff that happens. Ask any questions you want and i'll make sure my friend posts his TIMESLIPS here too

ok, i understand that MAF part.
But why not fix his exhaust, start making some more power.

89,
That's a great, cheap mod. If you expected contradiction, go back and read any of my posts on MAF modification. I generally try to discourage it on 305 engines because the flow numbers just don't support the theory under 6,000 RPMs.
A 350 is a bit different story, and you'll probably find that in my earlier posts as well. Have you considered trying a thick-film MAF instead? (No screens, no heat sink, larger diameter.) By those numbers, it should be good for another 10-15 HP over the gutted ones.

How much is it, i'd consider it if it was cheap, but like i said...my friend is in high school and on a limited budget.
Where do i pick up these maf's? Are they aftermarket? I want to get a seperate maf gut it yadda yadda yadda... because i've heard gutting it can throw codes. And personally i hate codes, it's just a little pet peeve of mine.

Not to start any battles, but several members have experienced errors after removing screens. Depending on the orientation of the sensor and the intake ductwork, too much of the intake air can flow along an unintended path at part throttle (i.e., NOT enough of it through the sampling tube) if the screens aren't there to break up air flow. It doesn't happen all the time, but has to be frustrating as heck when it does.
The Wells/Conrad SU-145 is a thick-film sensor MAF, and uses a single flat metal matrix to "delaminate" air flow through the housing instead of a round wire (restrictive) screen at each end. It also has a 3-5mm larger I.D. than the Bosch unit, and flat flows more air. It is a clone of the LT1/LS1 MAF design, but for OBD I systems. Mine cost me $172.00, brand new, full warranty.

Good results! Its not clear to me, tho, are these runs on the same day? What time of day? Did the temp change at all? Just gotta ask...

***i forgot to mention he has SLP runners
BUT
they really aren't doing anything *YET* because of the backpressure issue...once he does that and i play with the timing....i'm hoping to get the car going 14.0 on the stock converter and about 13.8 or so with my cheapy 2200stall i gave him
Hello all im the kid with the 89 IROC. and yes its true. I ran 15.1 a couple times, then Jimmy showed up, we put on the ported MAF and my next run was a 14.8
. And yes my 60' were both basically the same 2.0**'s. So believe the man, now i just gotta take care of that damn cat!!
