timing wont stay put, really need help

alright im about ready to take some 12 gauge buckshot to my distributor this is so frustrated. i have to set my timing literally every day. the dist clamp bolt is really tight, im afraid i'll strip it if i do it any tighter. but i can still grab the distributor and turn it either way without much trouble. its insane. is that little clamp really the only thing that holds it in place? i've got an msd distributor, the clamp only is about 1 inch wide where it contacts the flared out part of the distributor that sits on the block. is this the way its supposed to be? please help, im almost ready to have my neighbor weld the #$@*ing thing on.

Try a new distributer hold down? Its usually a little bent so it can keep pressure on the distributer, if you tighten it too much i'd imagine it can flatten out and not keep a good hold on it. There really isn't anything else it might be that could be causeing your problems

Did you possibly put the holdown on upside down? It is bent a bit and if its upside down it will make very little contact with the dizzy.

its a possibility, i started having these problems after i replaced my distributor gear, so its a good possibility. ill go try flipping it now and see if it helps.

Do you have a stock style or a chrome hold down? Had no luck with chrome ones.

yeah if it's a chrome one you may want to rough up the bottom so it grabs the dizzy a little better.

Maybe try a shorter bolt.
