Open Element or Snorkle Are Cleaner?

Should I just stick with my single snorkle air cleaner assembly and buy the $35 K&N replacement element or should I buy a K&N open element air cleaner assembly? Which setup is the best?

Probably won't gain a thing with a K&N filter in your stock air cleaner since the snorkle is the restriction. Open element air cleaner.

The open element is the cheapest option and has worked quite well for many people over the years (including myself.)
The stock single snorkel air cleaner is complete junk.
The stock dual snorkel isn't such a bad piece in terms of it's inlet size. My gripe with it is it has the same ultr-low lid profile that the single snorkel piece has. If you have a dual snorkel, just look at it from the bottom wit hthe lid on, the distance between the lip and the lid is tiny. Air flows DOWN into a carb, not across it. With so little room between the carb inlet and the lid it can't be good for airflow and mixture control. There is a fix for this, instead of using the stock flat lid, score a raised lid from a G-body or truck. It should still fit under the hood and also work that much better.

I've gone with an open element filter....if nothing else, you'll love the sound.

As usual Ed's got it right. A good dual snorkle will flow. I still like the look and sound from an open element. The depth of knowledge of the people on these boards is incredible. I had NEVER worked with a computer controlled car before this one and was afraid to do anything until reading these boards for a while. Now there's no mystery. Even if a question does come up with in a day or so you get several answers.

I went to the junk yard and found a lid that simply covers the cleaner element, but leaves all the room around it open. Works great--no flow restriction at all. And it still brings in some cool air from the single snorkel out front, to counteract the hot underhood air.

It also makes a good basis for cowl induction, if that's the way you want to go.

Total cost? $2.10 Canadian

Really good idea, Ed!

You could also buy one of those new K&N lids that are a filter themselves. Then the carb could suck air straight through the top, too.

But the price is a bit much at almost $60 US. That would nail us Canucks for more than $100 in our funny money.

I run the taller lid with a K&N 1500 filter and a 4" hose and it pulls great. I've had it to 135

I got the lid from a "cop" 350 and the 4" breather connection from an old big block breather that was sitting around.

in case you wanted specifics, i got one of the cheap edelbrock chrome open element's along with a 14 in k&n - it's roughly the same size as the old snorkel = if i remember correctly, i got the 3 inch tall one (either that or 4) and it sits just under the hood with about an inch of extra screw for the wing nut to go on

remember to plug that air line if you do take off the snorkel - mine has fallen off many times, and it makes the ole lg4 run like crap..errr more crappy

I think my setup works pretty well, I have a homemade dual snorkel air cleaner. I made a trip to the junkyard and picked up another aircleaner like mine and cut out the snorkel, then I cut a hole in my original air cleaner and screwed on the extra snorkel. A friend of mine gave me a taller lid air cleaner off of an old monte he was junking, along with a new element. Night and day difference. THe whole thing cost me about $20.

I've got a LG4 4bbl also. How much of a sound difference is there? Do I buy just the filter and cover or is there another conversion needed for the small breather(can't think of the name of it now, damn)element that is on the side that hooks up to my single snorkle? Which model K & N do you guys reccomend?

If you want a poor man's cowl hood, just remove the seal on the back of the hood.
