Timing Way Off?

just finished installing a bunch of stuff in my car. trick flow heads, trick flow roller rockers, air gap intake, msd plug wires, procomp HEI distributor. car will turn over, but only give one big back fire and i stop cranking it. i thought the distributor was 180 degress off, so i took it out changed it around, still the same thing.

i read articles here, like they said put the 1st piston to the very top which i did, and when installing the distributor make sure the rotor faces the 1st piston, which it did, but after take it out a few times, it moved its position, does this harm anything?

im pretty sure the plug wires are on right, can anyone copy the correct way to put on the plug wires? i have an HEI distributor and the big coil sticks out the side, which is number 1?

motor doesnt do anything but turn over and give a back fire every now and then.

any ideas?

is this the right firing order? and on the HEI distributor where the coil sticks out, which is number 1? if you could help out quickly id be appreciated as i need this running ASAP

im curious token, what did you change from the first idle clip to the lopey one? mine sounds similar to the first one and i dont like it, i know its got the potential to sound nasty but it just isnt there. idles about 700 rpm now.

ok ive got updated news, if you look above at the firing order diagram i follwed it.

my motor is a '72 350, so the distributor is an HEI

i followed the 4 screws to hold it down(on the diagram), so the big coil that sticks out, is all the way to the right(if your in front of the motor at the crankshaft pulley), and going clockwise i started it with 2-1-8-4-3-6-5-7.

the car turns over, i let it turn over about 5 times, and while hitting the gas, and a big BANG comes out of the carburetor, and a little smoke. no backfires on the exhaust. im using open headers, as i didnt bolt up the exhaust yet.

the piston #1 is at the TOP, rotor is facing piston #1

what am i doing wrong?

Are you finding TDC with the marks with a piton stop or using marks on dampener?

If your using marks on the dampener that could be your problem, theyre usually out a ways.

Try spinning the dizzy clockwise a bit?

i replaced the heads, so i turned the crankshaft myself til the #1 piston was at the top.

when you take out the distributor it moves like an inch, and everytime you put it in, it goes clockwise and not pointing at #1 cylinder.

but tonight it finally pointed directly at piston 1.

all i got was a bang out of the carburetor after letting it turn over about 5 times

token im running a carburetor not TPI or TBI or whatever you have, but im a little interested in this zero lash thing.

will this make your vehicle not start?

ill start from scratch

im at the block, i put on the new heads(trick flow twisted wedge heads) with fel pro 1010 gaskets. i installed the lifters 7.9 on the intake and 7.7 on the exhaust. i put on the trick flow 1.6 roller rockers, and tightened them down as hard as they would, while tightening you could see the spring compressing. then i installed the airgap intake, torqued it, installed distributor, the rotor pointed at # 1 piston. i then installed the wires into the distributor, then installed the carburetor on top. i have any wire that need to be plugged in, installed.

at first it would backfire, and catch fire. i removed the cap, and installed the plug wires with the coil on the HEI distributor point right directly if your looking at it from the front of the motor. now, from the image above for the firing order, i looked at the distributor and noticed the 4 screws that hold it down. so on the HEI with the coil sticking out, means on the left of it going clockwise it would be 2-1-8-4-3-6-5-7. now when i turn it over, all i get is it turning over and about the 5th time the carb makes a big bang and i see smoke hovering over the motor.

i have trick flow twisted wedge heads, comp cams hardened pushrods 7.900, and 7.700, trick flow 1.6 roller rockers, edelbrock air gap intake, edelbrock 750cfm carb, msd 8.5mm wires, procomp brand new HEI distributor.

im stumped as to what im doing wrong.

could tightening 1.6 roller rockers TOO tight cause the motor not to start, cuz ill tell you right now, i tightened pretty hard. you can see the spring get smaller and smaller lol

now i know is to, untighten them...move the pushrod til there is no place, then 1/2 a turn after that.
