Alternator replacement
Alternator replacement
Need some help, took off the serpintine belt, just a few min ago and was looking at my alternator and it has what looks like star shaped screws holding it in like you would need an allen wrench, plus there is this huge cast iron thing its bolted to and it looks as though I would have to take off like 5 pulleys to get this off cause its attached to the alternator, maybe there is a trick to get these suckers off? if any of you guys could give me detailed instructions on how to get it off It would be appreciated.
Thanks

the star screws are not allen. they are Torx. I think the one you need is about a 15.
I don't know about the cast iron. The only thing on my alternator is the cooling fan.

You will need 2 different Torx bits. Sorry, I can't remember the numbers off hand. 10mm socket, and 1/2" breaker bar or ratchet.
1.)Take the serpentine belt off using the breaker bar to loosen the idler pulley.
2.)Disconnect the battery
3.)Remove the 10mm bolt that holds the alternator wire on.
4.) Unplug the other 2 wires.
5.) Remove the 10mm bolt for the alternator to exhaust manifold bracket.
6.) Remove the 2 Torx bolts holding the alternator on.
7.) Remove the alternator. Might take some persuasion wiht a rubber mallet. To reinstall, just do everything in reverse. Pretty easy. Good luck.

Ok so I got a 5 set of torx bits and tried to use them on my alternator, I got one off but there is 2 more that are torqued on there so much that It seems IMPOSSIBLE for me to get them off, plus the screws are becoming stripped and I am worried that if I try and harder they will become totaly stripped.. I need help bad what should I do to get this damn old a*ss alternator out?
thanks
