Won't start & dies at idle?
I have the 305 TBI and it won't start unless I put some fuel in the carb myself to get it to fire. Plus it will stay running if I hold the throttle down but when I let it idle it dies. I need help!!!

After you put the gas in do you step on the gas to let air in , or can you just turn the key and it will start up run , then die after it burns the fule .Do not know much about the TBI but maybe someone will jump in .

I just turn the key without stepping on the throttle and it will start after putting some fuel in it. It will then stay running as long as I keep the rpm above idle. It dies if I try to let it idle.

Check your IAC, Idle air control sensor.
There are few articles of how to adjust your minimum air at idle on the article page (duh, article on article page). Anyway, it sounds like a bad IAC and or TPS.
Take the IAC out and spray it with some carb cleaner.
once you are done measure from the base where the threads start to the point at the end of the sensor should measure 1 1/8". If its more that that, just push in on the sensor untill it compresses a bit. usually rocking it back and forth while pushing it down would do the trick.
See if that helps.
If not, than you have some problem with either a fuel delivery or your fuel pressure regulator.
Check your tune up stuff.
Usually timing thats off could cause crap that you are describing. Also get new spark pluggs unless you did all of that. Make sure everything is firing right. One messed up wire and you are not firing at least two cylinders in order. Which will shut you off, especially in an ECM equiped car.
Here is a check list in order of importance, in my opinion.
1.AIC, take out and clean. (let me know if you dont know what am talking about, so that I can explain).
2. Tune up. (unless done recently, get it all replaced.)
3. IF all the previous fails than we are looking at possible pump or FPR problems, but for now I doubt it.
Some times if VATS is disabled or the wire to it is stripped it will mess with the ignition..
Its also worth checking the starter, although from the sounds of it, it shouldn't be a problem
Let me know how it goes.
laters.

I just bought the car and I'm pretty sure it hasn't had a tune-up for a while. The throttle bodie unit is pretty gummed up so I think I'm gonna try cleaning it first. As far as the idle air control sensor, is there a way to test it to see if its good or should I just replace it? The guy mentioned to me that the distributor control module might be bad when I bought the car so could that be part of the problem?

Well I adjusted the AIC module and the car fired up the first try. That problem solved.
Now the car still died on me after it ran and got warm after about 10 minutes. Something is obviously getting hot and killing the motor. Any ideas?
Would the control module have anything to do with this, I was told it might be bad?
