Oil Change

Where do you guys suggest I get an oil change at? Usually go to Wal-Mart (yeah, I know-but it's the cheapest) but I checked my oil at a gas station after they changed it and it was low-don't know if they didn't fill it up all the way cause they're only allowed to put in a max of like 5 qts.-your thoughts?

The best place to get an oil change is your driveway. Anywhere else and you are trusting your car to someone else. Dont go to Jiffy Lube, though. My friend worked there and I have seen them forget to put the drain plug back in, forget to tighten the filter, not seal the tranny pan gasket worth sh*t, etc.

Don't go to Wal-mart. I've seen what happens when you put a drain plug in with an impact wrench, like they do at my local wally-world.
Honestly, if you want it done right, you're going to have to do it yourself. Very few lube-monkeys don't cut corners. I used to be one of them when I worked for a lube shop, but my bosses would ride my a$$ for having high bay-times.
You'll also save a lot of money in the long run, if you do it yourself.

I would agree to do it your self, But with work time is short for me, I was lucky enough to find a local jiffy with some young guys working at it that love to see my car every three months(even though I only put like 1500 miles on it but for $20 why not) And every time the same kid asks me if im selling it yet. So if you have no choice but to bring it somewhere shop around and find some guys you can trust. The place I go also gives you a coupon for a full service car wash at the place down the road. So for the $20 for an oil change, lube, washerfluid, and the other little things they do and a full car wash and vacume its well worth it.

On another note a buddy of mine went to one of these type places and they did not tighten his filter all the way, blew engine cause no oil left in it, but they were responsable so they did replace it. So if you need a new engine deffinitly go and have someone do it and hope they mess up.

OH MY where that smile come from oh this is great.

This is basically what I figured-I have ZERO access to any tools necessary to change my oil-much easier for me to take it somewhere else. I'd definitely rather do it myself-I've done before-but now I'm away at college and I didn't exactly bring my ramps w/ me.....

All you have to do is buy some ramps, $17 for the metal kind at Wal-Mart, oil filter wrench , and 5/8 wrench I believe for the drain plug not sure though. Total shouldn't be more than $25.

What's college got to do with anything? You should have more time there than you will when you get out, get a house, job, kids, etc. LOL, I had more tools in my apartment than Pabst Blue Ribbon when I was in school...even had a spare tire for my truck leaning against the wife's kitchen table . Like Mark said, a $25 investment? Barely over the cost of one cheap oil change at the local Jiffy Rube?

Do it right, do it yourself, never compromise by leaving your machine in the hands of those who could be imbeciles. Just my $0.02.

I have to agree with the group. If you really care about your car, why would you have someone you can't trust even wash it let alone work on it? By the time you screw around trying to find someone you can trust, you could get the short list of items that Mark listed (probably have room for it under the bed, right?) and know the job is done right and save money. You already had a problem with Wal-Mart. Why take another chance? If you still want to have it done, at least ask around for a reputable general repair shop to do it. Just my .02 cents.

Ken

OK, I just saw where he mentioned college, and I do agree to an extent. I just started my soph year at college, and parking is terrible. I have to park a good distance from where I live. And to carry the ramps and all up these darn hills would be a drag. And there isn't exactly a lot of room in the parking places. But what I plan on doing is, I changed my oil before I left for college, and I hardly drive my car maybe 50 miles a week, so I am going to change my oil when I go home for turkey day. Which will have been for months but only about 2k miles. Luckily also I only go to college 3 hrs. from home. But I would not want to trust anyone else with my car, except my dad and brother. So I would suggest just try any way you can it may be a little inconvenient at college, but it's worth it.

i've wporked at two gm dealers, and we did earl changes for 20.95 and 21.95. half hour guarantee, all fluids, delco filter, mobil oil, check tires, lube door and hood hinges and latches, look for other otential problems, light inspection. at the lube place i worked at you got an oil change and lucky if anything more because no one cared. you were supposed to get a lot, but rarely did that happen, and there were a lot of stooges working there. you could go to any gm dealer and know your being taken care of well.
