Factory non a/c look
Factory non a/c look
ok, I want to do an a/c delete because it oesn't work, I don't use it anyways, and it just gets in the way of everything, so I'm going to get heater controls and everthing from a non a/c car and I was wondering how hard it is to do the job. Taking everything out should be no problem, but what abou the new heater setup?

no,the regular controls worked just fine, just when you put it on A/C it will just blow like you have the vent on.other then that the heat, defroster, ect. all work.I'm going to do my 84 soon.We come across a/c delete cars often
see I want to take the controls out and put in just heater controls. I'm sure it's not too tough but I was wondering what's imprtant to keep in mind while doing this. anhyone ever made the delete look like there wasno a/c from the factory?

I'm with you on this. I'd like to do it to my "track car" soon. Unfortunately I don't live near the junkyards, so I don't know how or when I'll be able to swing it. The guys selling this stuff on the classifieds here are smoking crack! They think factory non-a/c stuff is like gold or something.
I've heard that an S-10 heater-only setup will work. I have not verified this, and it may only be in reference to the firewall side of things. I'm not sure.
Please let me know what you find out and do to your car!

I don't know how difficult it would be, but it won't be as simple as just changing the control head. The vents in non-A/C cars are cable actuated, not vacuum actuated.

I was talking about a "heater-only" setup (i.e. NON a/c) coming from an S10.
I didn't say that the S10 is the only way to go. Furthermore, I'm not sure that it will even work. I was just told by someone that he had "heard" that it would (or might).
Again, I have reason to believe that this person was only referring to the pieces on the firewall side of the system (the box that houses the blower motor).
Matt, definitely take a look at it and see what yo think!

Matt if you could let us know, that'd be great! I've pulled my A/C, but left the evaporator in the box on the firewall... if I could swap over a "heater-only" firewall box, I would.. but I've never seen a "heat-only" F-body in the yards around here. I've seen plenty of S10's, though... and never gave 'em a second glance.

I found it easy to remove everything, but one advantage to leaving the stock controls in is that it provides a manual control over your radiator fan when in traffic, at least in my car. Just select any of the ac options and the fan kicks in. I wouldn't want to loose this option.

I've had the same results as TomP looking for a heater box. I'd like to delete the a/c on my 86 but can't find one. My friend has a 7500 car salvage and he doesn't even have one.

I didn't think they were that rare. Think of all the V6 stripper cars there were out there. Maybe the problem is that all the yards are only stocking new stuff (the big name ones it seems are doing this) and there's not much early thirdgen stuff around. Idunno?

well, since about the mid 70's, about every vehicle sold in Oklahoma has a/c being we see many 100degree plus days through the summer. I may have to find a northern yard to get one.

As far as I am concerned, the S10 setup wont work without considerable modification. Stick with the camaro setup.

OK. I looked at my '85 S10's non-A/C heater box (underhood part). It looks like it just might work. It is a one piece unit that is the same length as my GTAs box and appears to be the same height as the one on the GTA (pretty hard to say on the height with both boxes mounted on the vehicles..). I think it will work! The one on my S10 appears to be the same as what is in MeanYellowZ's picture too...... It is a one-piece unit and the blower resister module is in the exact same spot as his.... The downside would be that they appear to not accept the same blower motor assembly...
Question to MeanYellowZ: Did your car originally have A/C from the factory? I ask because the firewall may be cut differently for A/C and non-A/C cars.......
Either way, I would put good money on the fact that an S10 non-A/C heater box would be able to be slightly modified to work if it doesn't, in fact, bolt right in!!
Well, I would appreciate some more info on this if anyone has any rock-solid results on if it will bolt right in or not........ I just might set out in search of one for cheap out of a junkyard and give her a go over the winter.....

well I can tell you that you do eed a new blower motor for the heater only setup. If I can find a donor car I'm just going to pull everything hooked up to it out and transplant it.
The S10 box will not work as far as bolting in, it may work with modification, and i believe it will leave some of the firewall holes visable by a little bit, requiring some filling. My car was an A/C car that I changed over with a junkyard Camaro heater only box.
Here is a picture of my non-ac box.
Here is another with the rest of the "stuff" in the bay

Well now that I got a good look at that F-body one (thanks Leirch) it looks as though the S10 one will be a bit of a project to get it to fit.... It appears to me to be longer than the F-body one in the part that goes over the heater core, right where the Evaporator would normally be. The S10 one kinda drops down there to a spot that looks to be a bit lower than that F-body box..... It is shaped pretty much the same so you could definately get it to work with a little bit of fabrication. And if you were careful when you fabbed it up and painted it nice before the install, it would look totally OEM......
I might still get one and work it over a bit this winter. We really have nothing to lose since the right one from GM is discontinued and a used one is pretty hard to find out of a junkyard since most F-bodies had A/C....
