Is more than 18 degrees base timing too much?

Well i am still trying to get my TBI to Carb project up and going right. Only problem i have now is, if i am at a dead stop and i mash the pedal, it takes it a second to get going, it wont even break the tires loose, and from what i understand advanceing the timing should kelp this. I have already got the base timing set at 18 degrees for a total of 36 degrees, if i set it any higher will it be dangerous to the motor?
