406 engine
I'm thinking about buying an 84 camaro which has a 406 engine in it. Just how exactly is a 406 engine made? All i know about it is that its a built 4-bolt small block and it makes 383hp and 465 lbs of torque. Is it a destroked 454 or a stroked 350 or what? It has a holley 750 carb on it, but i'll probably put a brand new holley 670 avenger carb on it because the 750 needs a rebuild. Just how streetable do you guys think a motor like this would be? Its going to be a daily driver. I'll try and find out some more specs on it such us the cam size and heads, but i probably wont be able to for a few days. (it has a T5 tranny behind it which is very suprising and the car runs 13.6 in the 1/4)

lake said above a 406 is a bored 400 wichg is a small block. a fore bolt main block are pretty hard to come by. a 400 is a very streetable motor, lots of low end torque, youll be very happy with it

Gold 85 Camaro with no motor, pulled the 2.8 to make way for a 350 wich was pulled this summer because a 406 will replace it. The 406 sports a stock bottom end with ARP bolt holding it togeter, flat top hyper pistons. Comp 282 solid cam(.528 lift with 1.6 rockers) Savin up for my Sportsmen 2 heads right now. still Have the perf RPM and 650 DP i used on the 350. Headers and 3inch exhust. Shooten for mid to low 12s next summer

Apeiron and gold85 were both right. a 406 is a small-block. I am in the process of builing a 400 smallblock (2 bolt) but and going to use a 3.75 stroker crank with 6in rods and offset pin pistons to make a 429.
to reply.. the 4-bolt 400's were prone to stress cracks around the front main cap due to the main bolts being close together. That's what the guy who did the block work on my motor told me.

to make a 429 you'll need to bore it .010 over and find a 4.00 in crank .good luck anyways...........be careful of the thin cylinder walls if you go .030 or more......................
