advice on electric water pumps
advice on electric water pumps
ok, I am converting my 87 IROC 5.7 to a serpentine system... have the parts off a later model... but what about water pump... my old one won't work because of rotation... NOW: what do I do? Do I replace my pump with a new one for later model camaro with the right rotation, OR... do I get one of those electric pumps advertised all the time... and do I now upgrade my alternator... come on guys, I'm counting on you... pros and cons.
ADVICE please:
ADVICE please:
Is this a street driven car?If it is,I wouldn't use an electric water pump, they are really only for short durations like drag racing. Is the rotation now reverse? You can run the coolant flow either way as long as the pump is rotating the way the pump is designed.I have a '91 Z-28 that had a reverse rotation water pump and replaced it with an electric, now it flows the opposite(I drag race it only).Reverse rotation is supposed to cool better, but the clockwise rotation will cool just fine.

Do not buy an electric pump, period.
Now that's taken care of you will have to get a reverse rotation pump from 88-92. Do not confuse this pump with a reverse flow of the LT1, totally differant beast. You can get a stock replacement lifetime new pump from the parts store for under $20 OR, get a performance pump from Stewart for $69 and have it outperform a stock pump 100%!

I run an Aerospace Engineering electric water pump on my fairly hot 383 with no problems. It's my daily driver as well.

Here's why I said never run an electric pump on a street engine. It's a comparason of the Stewart pump vs. the Edelbrock one. The Stewart put out 18GPM at idle and shot over 100GPM at 4500RPM! That's flow baby, and it's just the Stage 1 they tested. The Stage 4 pump puts out 34GPM minuimum.
the most I've eber seen an electric pump rated at was 25GMP, not bad at idle but that's all you get since it's electric.
