Edelbrock Performer RPM & Carb - help

This is a last ditch effort BEFORE I cut into my stock hood - I swapped in a 350 with Edelbrock Performer RPM intake & Edelbrock 1405 carb - and I can't find any air cleaner to fit under hood. I've tried several "drop-base", with no luck.

Can anyone that has this combo and got it to fit under the hood provide a brand & p/n for an aircleaner housing that they got to fit? Thanks.

I've got an Air Gap intkae with Holley 650 and 1/2" spacer and it fits under the hood with a drop base cleaner from Pep Boys. It's got a 3" K&N element. It's close, but it fits

My Edelbrock Performer EPS intake 2701 and 1406 cab with the 1207 14" air filter skims my hood by about 1/8"

But i see the RPM intake is only about 1/2" taller than my EPS, now why the heck wouldnt a drop base clear

Well, I tried the Edelbrock #1221 air cleaner, with no luck. I had to use the #1221 'cause I added an electric choke to my 1405 carb. I also tried a no-brand dropbase and it was the same. And the Holley Free Flow, although it measures 1/2" shorter, it's not dropbase, and it doesn't fit either.

I also have new poly motor mounts in place - maybe that makes the difference. Alot of people say it'll fit, but I can't seem to make it happen. And I really hate the idea of cutting into the hood, and I don't have $459 + $150 shipping for a new hood right now.

I'll see what Pep boys has tomorrow and try that. Edelbrock states that the RPM Air Gap is the same height front and rear as the Performer RPM (I always thought the Air Gap was taller?).

I have a '91 Firebird 305 TBI and I will try the Edelbrock performer with the stock carb. The only problem that I may have is that I have a stock '84 cowl induction hood with the underparts on it with the 1" rubber grommet.

I had the RPM Air Gap and Edelcrap carb under my stock hood. Problem with the Edelbrock carb is that you need a spacer between the drop base and the carb to clear some of the linkages. I had a 1 inch spacer between the carb and drop base and had to run a 2" cleaner which kind of sucks. If you can get a 1/2 " spacer between the carb and air cleaner then I think it would free up enough to run a 3 " filter. You don't need any spacer between a mech secondary Holley. Right now I have the RPM Air Gap, Demon carb, and 3 " K&N filter in the drop base and it fits under the stock hood perfect.

For what it's worth I lost 1 rwhp on the dyno by removing the air filter, so the drop base must not be too bad.

I had to use a drop base with a 1/2" spacer between the carb and the cleaner and then use a 2" filter.

My poly mounts lifted the motor about 1/2".

I thought it might clear a 3 " in my car but also knew that a differant carb was coming. I have stock motor mounts though.

I had no problem fitting a 3" and a drop base before i did the motor mounts.

I might just have to make some custom mounts or go with some solid mounts to mount the motor as low as possible. That way you lower the center of gravity and gain some hood clearance. Hell i might even cut out the fire wall and put the motor back 12" or so. Since this is really just a race and fun screwing around car, i don't really care.

spacers

The Edelbrock dropbase cleaner I used (#1221) had indentions for the linkage - no spacer necessary, and it still didn't fit. At 14", the base touched the dizzy cap, but didn't matter since the hood wouldn't close. Didn't get to try the Pep Boys version today - will try again Thursday and let everyone know.

I'm less concerned with HP loss at the moment - I just want to get the hood back on! LOL

Again - anyone with a dropbase cleaner housingthat fit with poly mounts, an RPM or Air Gap intake, and 1405 carb please chime in with a cleaner housing part number!

Get a small element filter 6-8" or you could even try the edelcrap foam triangle shaped filter.

I must of posted on this subject a hundred times. Search my posts Keyword L-88 Edelbrock sells a 1/2" plastic air cleaner spacer. use a old GM L-88 or L-72 big block corvette air cleaner base
from the late 60's. use a banjo fitting on the fuel inlet of the carb. You may have to modify the throttle linkage bracket as the air cleaner base sits down low around the carb.

this GM air cleaner base is a good 1" lower than any thing sold by the aftermarket. I cannot gurrante it will clear your electric choke.

you can get the air cleaner base from Noah performance GM does not sell it anymore.

The Noah Performance # is 2193b

It is on this page

A holley carb has to have the choke horn removed and the bowl vent tubes shortened.
The origional carbs that used this air cleaner had a shorter choke horn and downleg boosters.
fits a Qjet too.
The base will just hit a HEI distributor at the back. Just grind a flat in the edge of the base to clear the distributor cap.

I am getting real tired of posting on this same old subject over and over again. Can one of the moderators make a sticky of it?

Not sure if this is exact same set up as you, but it is a performer intake, 600cfm performer carb w/ electric choke. Sitting on top of a sb350. This air cleaner/assembly cleared stock hood for me.

Yep - seen 'em! And at $275, I would be almost at a new cowl hood!

vortec rpm intake, 1405 carb, no choke, banjo fitting w/ the 14x3 edlebrock open element (1207?) and a spacer between the carb and air cleaner.

I had to cut down my big spacer, because the smaller one had melted on the LG4, haha. spacer for the air cleaner is probably less than half an inch. banjo fitting works wonders for clearing an open element.

EDIT: btw... no clearance problems, stock sc hood.

Remember the Performer is 15/16ths of an inch shorter that a RPM Air Gap.

Pretty sure the first guy was looking for the performer, atleast he didn't specify air gap. Though it's good to know just how much more clearance I'll need if I go air gap. Thanks

Edelbrock has measurements on their website for all the intakes currently available. Performer RPM and Air Gap both same height. I'm still working on something to fit under stock hood - at this point I'm trying a housing from Pep Boys, with a 1/2" spacer to clear the electric choke, and a 2 1/2" filter - will test this weekend and report.
