8 months later and she runs and drives...
Well 8 months ago my wimpy 305 spun a rod and a min bearing
I swapped to a 350 in hopes of fixing everything wrong and going for performance.
Long shot of delays, electrical problems. All of the sorts.
Today i finished the TPI to carb swap, and actually drove around the neighborhood. Woah! the power difference is immaculate. There wasn't much spin off at first, but with carb i'm doubting dead stop spin happens very often(throttle responce isn't always as great). She powers way into 6000rpm, even with a 650 carter and a Edelbrock performer(ported).
My throttle responce is great, but i do see a difference in comparison to TPI.
Boy are these old tires gonna need replacing soon.
Pics will come soon enough. But for now just use your imagination.
I did use the mallory fuel pressure regulator, and it works great. Pressure does jump a tiny bit but it doesn't seem to affect anything.
Timing is hard to get used to. Because with TPI it had electrical timing, and it was dead on every time. With mechanical it seems flimsy. With 3-4 difference almost every pulse. But once you get it just right she performs great.
I would consider myself a novice mechanic. This was the first time i ever actually swapped an engine. My internet bill paid off, i learned enough to actually get it all done.
My one question still remains. My car's speedometer doesn't work, yet it did before i pulled the engine and tranny, and the vss is hooked up.
I did however remove the ecm and stuff yesterday, would this matter?

go to know you got it drivable. Where did you set your fuel pressure? I set mine to 5 psi to compensate for any surges. Works great. Withy our timing, did you disconnect the vacuum advance before timing it? That would cause the timing to jump, same prob I had.
BTW: Hows that cam working out fro you? Same cam I have in my 310.

well lucky you... more than a year later, mine's still in my garage. good news is, i know it runs. bad news is, i had electrical problems with it after the rebuild, but... i managed to squeek about 300 miles out of it before i discovered all that, so i know everything seems to be in working order. hopefully i'll have all my wiring put back together soon and will get it on the dyno. you went a lot further than me, as far as modifying, but i consider myself a novice, too, and did it all in my garage amd mostly on my own as far as physical help. most of my tech help came from this site and some from my machine shop. i kinda ventured in to the unknown with my slightly different combination, but seems to be a happy set-up, other than needing tuning. good job rebuilding, and hopefully you'll get 'er all tuned up and running great.

Put the ECM back in. It runs the speedo on later cars. It takes the VSS signal, massages it and then sends a voltage to the speedo in the dash (which isn't really a speedo- just a calibrated volt meter, basically, run by the ECM).

fuel pressure is set at 7psi at all times. I kow most would say why so high? Well under full throttle at 4500rpm the fuel pressure its still at 6.5 psi. The car was tuned with a wide band o2 sensor and guage. She runs great.
At first i was thinking that i should get a separate Fuel pressure guage.
The return style guage can go where it is. And then a non return style regulator on the lne that goes to the carb. That way it cant jump at all to the carb but it can in other places. But i lated dropped that idea as the engine worked great to begin with.
My timing problem was my distributor. The advance mechanism was too loose. Since i have ties to people who work at autozone, i got a brand new MSD distributor for $120(below cost). Fixed that problem. I am now able to use mid grade gas as well, with my timing problem the car would diesle if anything under 93. Now i can use 89.
And my oil pressure is sky high still. I start up with 90psi of oil pressure. when she warms up to her operating temp of 180-190, i run 45-50psi idle and 60 full throttle. Shes a really nice car, and runs great very primative.
I am about to completely primatize the car. Remove all wiring, redo it myself, because factory did a lot of crap that wasn't needed. Plus going from EFI to carb, i want to remove everything thats not needed.
You guys will see a totally cool car when she is done eventually. What these cars were meant to be and should be, all mechanical, nothing electrical, and all performance.

IT burned them really nice after a full tune.
but now she doesn't do it, the 700r4 i have is going to crap.
It almost seems as if my motor killed my 700r4. But it should be able to withstand way more then the 400 horses i am expected to be pushing at the time.
After she was tuned with the o2 sensor and everything performance was like doubled. I couldn't stop it from spinning from a dead stop, and secod would love to try to come around me, and 3rd would chirp again.
But as said, now i have nothing.
