Oil coller on L98

Hey guys i'm wondering if i can remove my oil cooler that the oil filter goes on? i checked it out and it seems like i can just remove that and just thread it in. can this be done or do i need that? i need the clearance because the oil filter rubs my long tubes.

You can remove it but you'll need to do something with the coolant lines.

Isn't the factory oil cooler the last thing the coolant reaches before it returns to the radiator??? If so, the concept seems very inefficient. Anyway, I just removed the rubber hose running to the metal cooler line from the rad and hooked it directly to the metal line on the passenger side coming from the heater core. Then I had to cut the metal lines off. How does the cooler come off anyway? Does it just screw off? And can it be done without removing the flexplate?

Very true! The cooler adapter is held in with a tube that screws into the oil filter adapter(the same that's on other small block chevy's). It is easy to remove, just unscrew it. The problem you will be left with is that the bolt have taller heads that hold the adapter plate in place. So you can't just screw a new oil filter on. You will need to replace the bolts and then you'll be in business.

How about 'less effecient' than if it was actually cool water that had left the radiator that went to the oil cooler instead of hotter water that has just left the engine.

i had this same problem. took off the adapter then realized i couldnt just screw on a filter. i just put the adapter back on but got rid of all the coolant lines.
