need help quick!!!!!
I just got through dropping the new engine into my 89 GTA. The car is a TPI 5.7 with auto. We hooked everything up properly that I know of except these two wires comming off the wireing harness one is a black with a white stripe and the other is a tan with a black stripe(not the dist.wire) . I didn't cut these wires when I took the engine out (I don't think). All the sensors are hooked up and all the other wires are fine. My question is are these two wires ground wires to the pass side head along with the ground strap or do these wires go somewere else? These two wires are the only two wires that I have left to hook up.
When you try to crank the engine the only thing that happens is the dome light gets brighter???? The car makes no sound and the VATS has been disabled in the prom. The security light doesn't come on at all. I am reading 12 volts on the gauge. The car has a new starter that was put on right before the car went down.
When I got the car it ran but it had a cracked block and after 6mos. I have finally got it back togeather. I don't know if these wires were hooked up when I got the car. The car has tons of riggin done to it from the previous owners so I don't know what is correctly wired. If any of you know of Scott88GTA he had his car over at the house and we hooked everything up just like it was on his car.
If there is any mistyping or wierd sentences please forgive me it is 3:00 and I am vary tired.
Please help,
Brock

I just did the engine swap myself and on my car there was 3 wires WITH the ground strap on the passenger side head... I can't recall colors right now and it's too freakin' cold and dark outside to go look so it'll have to wait 'till tomorrow. On the drivers side head of my '86 there was two grounds that went there... actually 4 wires but two wires were connected together and the other two were connected together as well.
I would say for sure that those are probably grounds if you already have all the sensors and everything plugged in. Unhooked grounds will definitely cause the symptoms that you're talkin' about.

9 bolt Borg Warner Rear (2.77's....oh joy) :P
6" rods, approx. 9.7:1 Compression, Stock TPI (soon to be ported), 24#/hr LTI injectors (cleaned and flowmatched by Cruizin Performance), Hedman Shorty Headers, 3" exhaust with 80 series flowmaster, SBC 993 heads completely redone and modified for 1.6 RR, 1.52 RR (for now), Comp Cams XE262-14 TPI Cam, Holley AFPR, TPIS airfoil, MSD wires, MSD 6-AL Ignition, Hypertech 53,000 volt coil.
Track times to come.

I only had three ground wires on my driver side and the ground strap and those two pesky wires that I can't see anymore. I am going to check on extending those wires and hook them up to the head. What can it hurt? The only thing I can think of is it might blow a fuse if I try to start it with a power wire set to ground. There is only two things it can be a hot wire or a ground.

1) The car isn't shifting correctly we put in a new detent cable to the tranny. I didn't adjust the tv cable becuz I didn't know how. I went out and adjusted it earlyer I couldn't test drive it toinght becuz it is so loud. So I will test drive it tomorrow and post the results after adjusting the detent cable.
2) I am getting a maf code. I had some misfires and backfiring into the manifold so I am hoping the maf isn't bad. I am going to vatozone today and getting a maf relay and maf burnoff relay for the car to avoid purchasing a new maf.
3) The car is not wanting to rev past 3k and I think this becuz of the maf. I also have a new ignition module I am going to install to see if this combats the problem.
4) I need to re-adjust the rockers they are making way too much noise.
5) When the car got so hot and the headers started glowing (due to me forgeting to connect the EST wire and tighten down the dist. befor going for a drive) I melted some stuff, the wire to the knock sensor was burned in two and the coolent temp sensor harness and sensor melted togeather and caused me not to have a temp reading. I am going to the local u-pull it and getting the materials needed to correct this situation. </font>
