quick question on valve seals
The guy at NAPA insisted that the seals he gave me were correct exhuast seals, but they look very similar to the intake seals. I remeber reading somewhere that those seals that are pressed onto the head are good for intake but bad for exhaust. Is it ok to use these seals on the exhuast, or should i stick with the conventional umbrella seals? Thanks in advance.

If the head are machined for positive seals, I use them on both.

i use both too, o ring and the umbrella type positive seals. i know the fel pro ones i buy that fit on the valve guide work for both intake and exhaust. did they come in a pack of 16?

Sorry, I was not very clear about that. I got positive type seals not umbrella or o-rings for the exhuast seals for the exhuast. Can you use these on the exhuast end? My brother told me when he rebuilt his ends that you guys said not to use positive seals on the exhuast, and stick to umbrellas and o-rings. Why can't you use postive type seals on the exhuast?

As I said above, I use them on both if the head is machined for them. (in and ex.) never had a problem.

I use the positive seals on both whenever possible. AFAIK there's no reason not to. The umbrellas are a distant second, a poors substitute at best. I don't bother with the O-rings unless that's the only thing I have, in which case I try to delay assembling the heads until I have something that actually works.

I would use them on both and not worry about it. The story on not using them on the exhaust side goes like this:
Using them on the exhaust side, which sees exhaust pressure going up the valve stem rather than the vacuum pulling down the stem on the intake side can cause problems. Due the the exhaust pressure there is more of a tendency for oil to be removed from the guide and stem, so you dont want to restrict oil flow on the exhaust side as that will promote valve guide and stem wear. Using normal seals doesnt restrict the oil flow and keeps more oil on the stem and guide and will prevent excess wear.
Thats the story anyway. SBF's dont have a wear problem and all the mid-80's up use the positive seals on both. Its essentially the same setup otherwise, I think someone had a bad experience and went paranoid.
