Carbed 86 305 to carbed 350 swap in CA?

Hello. My first post on a third gen board, imagine that.....

I have an 86 FB with a 305 LG4 in it and it's broke

I need to swap in a 350, still pass smog, and have the swap be as cheap as possible, maybe just purchasing a remanufactured engine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

I don't know but I wouldn't think it would be legal to go from fi to carb in an older form I don't think they would let you pass unless you could make friends with a state inspector.

P.S. If they can't see it inside the engine it is legal.

he wouldn't be going from fi to carb.. LG4's are carb'd...

From everything I've heard and read in Cali you gotta go same year or newer, and it has to have been offered in the car. IE, you can put an LT1 in your 86, but you can't put an '02 327 from a truck. I've also heard Cali emmisions ****'s will go as far as to check the casting #'s on the block. I think your best bet is to find a place that won't do that, and figure out a way of getting a 305 to pass 305 emmissions, either that or find another LG4 or an L69.

just don't tell them its a 350. They can't look inside your engine.

BINGO

Take it from a smog guy, I don't want to know its a 350. Just bring it into the local smog banana with all the stock smog equipment installed and working and no one will care.

You can do what Tas said, most techs wont bother to check the block. Accidentally grinding all the identifying numbers off the block will make it really difficult to tell.

I know you dont want to spend money, but in case someone looks this post up, the ZZ4 swap is 100% legal on 82-87 carbed cars.

Actually, you can. The state just doesnt want you to know that.

hey, whoever it was tat said zz4 conversion, thats what i ws thinkin. jim pace performnce sells it for like 4400 and it has 355 horse and carries a CARB certificate, its legal and fast as a ****. on the lip side anyyone been folloein the my gen camaro in CHP mag? these guys give us bad names man. started with crbed 305 and 5000 later, with exhaust, carb rejetting, head work, and a 175 shot they can only muster 13.9's. absolutely horrible. all ican say is that they actually asked for suggestions on where to go from here, nd budget is the kkey. i ws thinkin if all thhey did was the zz4 theyd have come out faster and cheaper, but oh well. send your comments and suggestions to chevyhi@primediacmmg.com

The state smog ref guy down in Chula Vista told me that as long as everything LOOKS good they don't really care if it's actually working. He even suggested getting a 350.

Careful about the ZZ4. To be "technically" legal, you have to buy and install the entire conversion kit, which is about $1100 more than the ZZ4 crate engine. One thing the kit has that you don't get with the crate engine is the EGR tube to the exhaust manifold (required because the heads don't have the crossover passage).

But, like they are saying above, as long as all of the LG4 stuff is installed, or you use CARB certified replacement parts such as headers, a 350 will pass as easily as a 305. A new cat will make it even easier.

OK, so how about to make it cheap, I get a remanufactured engine from some place with a 3 year warranty?

If I went that route, any suggestions on what year car I should say I have to get the most bang for the buck from one of those?

What about some of the other cheaper gm crate engines? Do I need other stuff to make soemthing work like the egr tube mentioned for the ZZ4?

Thanks guys!!
