Oil Overfilled ~1/2 Qt...Bad?

I changed my oil today with 10W30 full synth and when all was said & done (new filter, oil, filler cap on and engine started for ~30 seconds) the 5 gallon oil jug was empty and the dipstick showed about 1/4" above MAX. The engine has 170,000 miles and doesn't leak/burn oil. Cold pressure is ~50 PSI @ highway speeds. I'm thinking this is all OK, but decided to be **** about it. Should I drain out the extra 1/2 quart or should it be cool as is?

I think you'll be fine, but extra oil WILL make the oil run hotter and you'll lose a little bit of pressure, especially at WOT.

You mean quarts right?

Cause 5 gallons would be a little on the full side.

Ummmm...yep! I guess it would've felt a little heavy if it were five gallons.

how would the pressure run lower and make the oil hotter if it was a little full

Our cars require 5 quarts correct? When I put 5 in, it also reads a little high. I also warm up the engine before draining.

I've had good luck with 4.6 qts with the L34631 filter (purolator number, but that size of filter).. 4.6-4.7 puts it right at the full mark once the engine has been run.

the oil filter will hold ~.25-.5 qt on its own assuming you replaced it. I wouldnt worry about it unless you went 1-1.5qt+ over.

Odd enough, my 2.8L hold 5.5qts

I think at 5 gallons it would be coming back out the valvecovers

I usually throw in a full 5 quarts, my engines pretty old and beat so it just gives me longer before i have to check or add oil
