062 vortecs need work,what can i do?

It's me again with another pop quiz guys.
I was going to get some 081 heads for my L03 but a friend here in town is going to sell me some 062 vortecs and some 1.6 roller tip comp rockers for $175.The only problem with the heads is that there appears to be some galling on the exhaust valves.could a machine shop repair the exhaust valve guides?are they actually repairable? There are no other defects in the heads besides this. The galling isn't bad but can be seen on the valve stems.Thanx for the help in advance.

The guides are easy to repair with a bronze thin wall liner, and OEM repl valves are pretty cheap too.
It seems like a good excuse to get a good HP valve job done and buy some new SS exh valves while you're at it.
But if you're really hard up, you could get by with the old used stuff too. Just buff the marks out with some 400 emery paper. They'd be a bit loose, but it wouldn't do any harm as long the seals are new.
They just wouldn't last as long as if you bought new parts.

If the valve guides are loose, as in you can wiggle the valve, no seals will be able to seal them. (Lesson learned on LB9) I recommend doing everything right the first time.

If the guides are too loose you will eventually hammer the valve seat out of round & that won't seal. Any competent machine shop can install new guides. OEM & aftermarket valves are readily available. You should match the springs to the cam you are going to use. The cam manufacturer can recomend this.

Galling on the top of the guide or on the bottom? Was the machining done previously to accept the higher lift? Were the 1.6 rockers used on the vortecs previously? What about the spring seats? I would also have screw in studs put in to run that amount of lift if it hasn't already been done.

the galling is on the stems themselves ,and yes 1.6 rockers were used before. the 1.6`s are the ones i`m purchessing as well.as far as everything else they`re bone stock.I plan on getting screw in studs as well.

This is what I have in the heads that I had prepared for a motor rebuild in progress right now:

machine shop labor:
$150-3 angle valve job (includes cutting for larger valves)
$100-install screw-in studs
$35-hot tank and mag heads
$50 set spring height
labor total $335

I bought new S/S 2.02,1.60 valves, screw-in studs, and CompCams springs(inc. retainers and locks). I lost some of the reciepts but $220 is a ballpark figure.

Total is $555.00 for parts and labor. Now add the $170 that I paid for narrow-body, full roller rockers and the total comes to $725.

Now I add the price for the bare heads, $150, and I have a grand total of $875 invested in these unported Vortec heads.

I have a set assembled with ss valves, 5 angle valve job, guides milled, aluminum valve covers, rockers, screw in studs, guideplates and performer RPM intake for $925. Brand new. Heads and springs good to .550".

This is a deal if the heads are fresh! I paid $160 for an airgap intake. Someone should jump on this deal NOW!
