what is the clicking noise on column when i push the button on shifter? WEIRD
I was sitting a stop light tonight, and i was bored, (as i usualy am because i drive way to much), and i was playing with the button on the shifter. and i was pushing it and and out and in etc. and i started to notice that everytime i let the button out i would hear a pretty loud click in the steering column, loud enough to be heard with stereo on and windows down. is this some sort of relay or test thing that keeps u from shifting unless the key is in the "ON" position?

It's the park lock cable that keeps you from pushing the button unless the key is in the on position.
Breath,
You and I must be clones. This used to bug the crap out of me, too. Wondering just what the heck the interlock was all about, I started to dig into it one day. The best I could determine without disassembling the upper bowl of the column was that it is the key release interlock solenoid. I used to think it was the rear hatch release interlock, but I could get the hatch to release with the button depressed as long as the park brake was engaged.
You can experiment like I did. Without driving the car, insert the key and turn the ignition to RUN. Depress the lock button on the gear selector to make the noise. Try turning the key to the OFF position or LOCK position. You cannot turn the key to the full LOCK position unless you release the key, then turn it back again.
I think this feature was intended to prevent locking the steering column while the transmission was in any position except park, in case the key was inadvertently shut off while the vehicle is moving. Don't ask me how, but just when you try to make something idiot-prrof, they'll find a bigger idiot. At best, things can only be engineered to be idiot-friendly, not idiot-proof.
