Stock Deck Height?
Stock Deck Height?
Does anybody know what the stock deck height is on a 9.5:1 L98?
Also the gasket thickness compressed on the stock gaskets.
Thanks!

9.025" from crank centerline to deck
If you're talking about deck clearance which is what it looks like you want to know about, it's .025" ± .005". Stock gaskets are about .039" thick.

Pulled apart an '87 L-98 a few months back and the gaskets were old-style steel shim gaskets. Those are usually very thin- .018" or so.
If you run the numbers (just did it myself) you will hit a compression ratio of about 9.45:1 with a .025" deck clearance, stock 12cc dished L-98 pistons, 64cc combustion chambers and the afore mentioned .018" head gaskets. That's very close to advertised compression on this motor. Put .039" head gaskets on the same combo you get 9:1 which is very far from advertised.

Piston to deck
sorry for confusions.
Dang, so GM didn't screw around with tight clearances...
Spose I'll be deck'n the block
thanks!

My bad... didn't realize they used shim gaskets in those, most factory motors I've pulled apart have had red Victorcore gaskets.

No bad, all is appreciated.
Ok, say that in building/blue printing an engine the gasket thickness is a variable, are there any considerations with gasket sizes? (not talking compression/quench) Like do thicker gaskets blow? thinner ones? materials they're made of stronger/ weaker?
Give me some gasketology

Is compression height how I would find my deck clearance with a new set of pistons?
If not, how so?
