tranny removal question

removing a tranny from an engine that has siezed up (broken rod) will that be a problem with the automatics? i forget its been a while, will i have trouble pullint the transmission back? cuz i dont know if i have to unbolt the torque converter as well or if i can leave it attached to the flexplate because theirs no way to crank that engine over.

You can leave the TC attached to the flexplate, but will have to pull the transmission straight back. You may have to coax the trans back past the three detents on the input shaft, pump hub, and stator hub. How you're going to get teh tC off after that is up to you, but I presume the pan will be coming off first.

Carnage photos are always good.

ill be nice since u helped me.

im sure i can get the torque converter unbolted once i pulled the engine, when u say i will have to pull the tranny straight back past the three detents on the input shaft, pump hub, and stator hub. this sounds difficult, does this mean i will have to be rotating the tranny side to side? i dunno if i can accomplish that.

Take the trans cross member, tq arm and driveshaft out. Put a jack under the trans pan and let it hang 4 inches or so down. (drain the trans fisrt). Then as your pulling the engine wiggle it and the tq converter will come out too. Of course you need to replace the input seal on the trans if you do it this way. Some people would just take them out togather but you need to get a real good angle to do this and most DIYer's dont have a cherry picker big enough for that. Of course if you do have the engine oil pan off and the heads you can usually get the bent/broken rods out and the engine will rotate.

Motor dead, removing tranny from motor anyways, sounds like alot of work from the underside .... why not just pull the motor and tranny as a whole unit, then attach tranny to new motor and reinstall as a whole unit? Then, everything is done from topside (better than being on your back) and tranny is easy removal from motor once the whole thing is out.

Anyways, it's a thought - when I swapped in a 350, I just took motor tranny out as a combo to make life easy.

you won't have to lift the car much, ramps under the wheels would be enough

you can leave the K-member up front in, but i'd pull the trans crossmember so when the tailshaft of the tranny got past it the thing wouldn't drop (probably about six inches) and swing forward, maybe smashing something.

its pretty easy pulling it as a unit. pull the distributor, sometimes they smack the firewall.
