Damn lug nuts

When I bought my 89' iroc-z it came with these star shape lug nuts, but with no key. The local tire shops can't do anything. Any suggestions???

Autozone sells a special socket for removing them.

dude.................

find a socket that is close to the same size (preferably an impact socket, not chromoly) and hammer that effer on there

then crank away

i've even ground a bit around the edges before, so i could get a smaller socket on there because i only had good sockets in the right size that i didnt want to mutilate.

the **** will take like 5 minutes a wheel.

supplies needed:

close fitting socket

big hammer

a pipe (to put over your ratchet for torque, if you have stock rims, it will save your knuckles)

30 minutes of time

i hate to be the guy to say to do a damn search buuut...

in anycase, either pound a existing socket on, or goto the autoparts store, any good store, and get a removal socket.

its a socket that has tapered spiral "teeth".. you pound it on with a hammer, then turn it loose.. it cuts in as it turns.

it WILL distroy the lock.... but it will get it off.

^I've done that too, but sometimes the going gets slow when you're worried about your wheel and you don't have a very good compressor

how do you get it off with the chisel? are you trying to cut in then rotate it? or are you actually splitting the lock?

im curious, ive never dried it.... is it easier then the pound on a socket method?

edit:
i have a basicly brand new imact chisel, that ive never used.. lol. i havent had a use for it yet.

baisically you go into it a little bit to make a notch, then you go at an angle to rotate it off. Keep going in the direction (lefty-loosey guys :-D ) till it gets loose, then you usually can do it by hand or vice grips. Anyways, much more consistant than the socket method plus you dont chance wrecking a socket but as I said before... BE CAREFUL!!!! slow is better, slipping = very bad and costly mistake. I like it, I have a el cheapo coleman (the lantern company makes air tools somehow) impact chisel, works like a charm. THe more powerful ones are kind of harder, more vibration so it walks more. But it always works, Only 1 time had it fail, that was because we actually broke the stud trying to get it off it was so rusted on. Impact chisels are great for breaking things too... :-) I like to use it to get the bushings out when aligning a 4x4 truck. Also for just ****ing around too.

we have those "universal" sets and they rarely work. that is why the air chisel is sweet.

I went to autozone and they tell me that they have no tool for removing those damn lug nuts! Anybody have a picture of the tool or something? I don't think the guys who work have any clue what their doing cuz every week there's new people and they always have the now hiring sign up!!!

I just bought a set of impact flip sockets with lock removal tool on the other side of each size. I remove these things on a weekly basis at work.

Tip try a larger size socket like disturbed said but 6 point impact (black ones) Beat it on with large hammer than impact it off.

Wrenching it off will suck

Will the same thing be able to take the lcoking nuts off my RS wheels? They are different than the ones in the original post. Mine have little notches on the othside diameter of the lug nut.

If you don't won't to use your own sockets, your local pawn shop should have the sockets you need by the dozen, and cheap.
