timing issue

i just put a new distributor in my 86. my timing light shows 40 degrees advance when i turn it where it will run and not ping. did i get it off 1 tooth on the gears when i put it in?

does anyone know what the 4 wires coming out of the firewall that plug into the distributor are? i have the 3 wire plug that goes back up to the coil but my new dist. doesn't have the 4 wire plug. it runs fine without them.

thanks

the 4 wire plug should be for the computer control. This is a non computer controlled dizzy I take it, so it doesn't have that plug. I'm guessing you have a non-cc carb to match it?

are you using a vacuum advance can as well?

Then we'll get to the 40* advance needed to run...

stock cc-qjet? with the two plug ins? both are plugged in right?

hmm, can you do that? use a vacuum distributor, and a cc-carb? I'm pretty sure you can't....

I don't think it'd work at all if you were one tooth off, or it'd miss and chug... have you driven it yet?

does the carb have 2 electrical plugs on it ? (aside from the one for the choke?) if so, it's cc, and I don't think it'll work so hot... not sure if you need a cc-dist for that...

If it runs ok, perhaps your balancer slipped? are you using a dial back timing light?

it doesn't have any elec. plug-ins except the choke.

i just put a new balancer on a week ago when i put a new 350 in. it has about 100 miles on it since the swap.

my light is an old craftsman with the advance dial on the end.

i just drove up the road and stopped to turn the dist. a few times until it didn't ping anymore.

i'm out of guesses, so I piped down hoping you'd get more knowledgeable answers here...

lets make sure we have all the knowledge we can get here:

non-cc q-jet
stock non-cc dist w/ vacuum advance

carb looks like this?
https://webdisk.ucalgary.ca/~jmknopp..._html/carb.jpg

dist looks like this?
https://webdisk.ucalgary.ca/~jmknopp...istributor.jpg

where is the vacuum advance from the distributor, hooked onto the carb? (you can look at that carb pic and let me know which colored arrow...)
i'm seeing if it's ported or manifold vacuum.

if you disconnect the vacuum advance on the distributor and plug it, does the idle get screwy? It shouldn't if you're on ported vacuum...

I don't have a lot of good guesses for ya...

The aqua colored arrow is where the vac line goes.
When it is disconnected the idle does not change.

BUT.....i drove it to work yesterday and when i was leaving it started right up then it died about 1 minute later. after it was towed home i replaced the BAT wire terminal because it was rigged up but that did not work. It shows 12.56 volts on the wire going to the BAT terminal but there is no fire coming out.

Any ideas on my new problem?
I tried a different cap and coil that i know work with the same results.

Its amazing that my mazda truck that i bought new in 89 died last week with 249,965 miles on it and never broke down. The "biggest" thing i ever had to replace was a radiator. My 85 has been towed twice and now my 86 has been towed.
