Motor Extraction ??

Motor Extraction ??
OK, this is gonna be my first motor extraction this coming weekend. I got the hoist lined up, but what or how do I hook it to the motor? Is there a plate I should be picking up, or what is the best method to get this sucker out safely without damaging anything or hurting anyone in the process?
Thanks in advance for the info

well if you have a carb'd engine I know that you can buy a plate that goes where the carb would be and its got holes for the pickers hook.
I have my engine fully dissassembled right now, im going to use two head bolts with a chain, going from one side to the other and using the hook with the chain.
I really dont know the proper way of pulling an engine, so please dont rely on my advice, wait for others to post also.

Any 3/8" shank sized bolt in a place symetric to a similar bolt on the other side of the engine will do: intake manifold bolts, exhaust manifold bolts, accessory bolt holes on the end of the heads, water pump bolts, etc. The engine mass needs to be centered between the bolts you pick.
I like to use a chain on each end of the engine and hook them in the middle to the hoist.
Or, the carb base plate previously mentioned works fine if all you're pulling is the engine. If you're pulling the engine/tranny together, you need to hook on farther back on the engine.

"extraction" makes it sound complicated I usually just say "I'm going to the garage to rip out the engine, AGAIN, if anyone needs me "

Yup the first motor I pulled seemed to take forever. I used to think that those guys were crazy when they pulled their motor to put new oil pan gaskets in.

Well, we started today. We didnt get it out, but we only got a good 6 hours in.
It was my first time pulling a motor, labelling all of the wires etc... getting things unplugged. some stuff is just a biatch to get unhooked. Everything is unhooked now from the block.
I need to pull the A/C compressor off, so I dont have to discharge the system. Pull the motor mounts, finish pulling the exhaust off and shore up the tranny.
A buddy of mine who has done this a bunch of times is coming over to help tomorrow. Hopefully we can get it finished up before I gotta head home for the weekend.
I'll post up some pics when I get home, dont have the cable with me to get the pictures off the camera.
Its definitely been a lot more work so far than expected, but I have learned alot. Definitely makes you appreciate and understand how everything works alot more.
