Changed tranny mount HOLY COW what a difference!
OK, so I've had my 89 2.8L firebird for almost 4 years and 60,000 miles. Since I got it, I've always had that thump when you hit the gas too hard. I found out almost three years ago how to fix it and actually bought the cheap autozone mount (anchor 2394 $7) about 6 months ago.
No reason why I haven't changed it until today LOL, I honestly could never find a piece of wood that I thought was big or square enough to spread out the force of lifting the tranny on a floor jack. Besides, my car still ran and I was afraid touching anything about it would break the tranny further. I already had a problem where it doesn't go in OD or D in the mornings (only in 2 or 1), and I think I was afraid to muck that up. I now know what the problem is, and I've got a different 700R4 half apart on the porch in the middle of rebuilding it.
I think thats what finally caused me to go and do it today, that if I were able to take the silly thing apart I ought to be able to go and fix my broken mount, and if I somehow broke it (and I know now that it wouldn't do such a thing) I could probably fix it.
Wow what a difference. I should have done this the instant I felt the first thud. I got back acceleration I didn't know I had (since I'm always babying it, afraid of the thump), I can pass on the freeway again, I'm not afraid to gun it anymore. It almost feels like a new car!
I had to take 3 bolts out of the crossmember to move it out of the way to get the mount -> tranny bolts out, but all told was only 30 minutes under the car. Very greasy dirty job, not difficult.

My 91 Camaro with the 3.1 would rip them in half almost every year- I could set my watch by it. How a puny little V6 could tear those things up so fast was and still is a mystery to me, but it sure did it. My "final solution" was an aftermarket poly trans mount with interlocking halves so that ripping it in half would be basically impossible.
