California Emissons?!

I went to auto zone the other day because a part comming of my power brake booster vacum hose broke. It was a small little piece that looked like a small fuel filter. It was running to a metal hose that runs into the block. The guy told me I have california emissons! This sucks because I live in TEXAS. I dont want all that emissions junk slowin me down . Does anyone know anything about Cali Emissons? And if so is there a way to "bypass" or cap off things? He told me to just buy a plug and bypass the little broken piece. I went in, got a connector, took off the weird thing and put in the connector and my brakes work just fine.

That part has nothing to do with either emissions, or California.

It's a check valve for the power brake booster; it holds vacuum in there so that you get at least one or two more assisted applications of the brakes after the engine stops running.

The "emissions junk" doesn't "slow you down". And that check valve SURE AS HELL doesn't "slow you down". I'd strongly recommend learning how stuff works and what it's there for, before just arbitrarily hacking things off your car that could someday save the lives of yourself as well as other people. Your not knowing, won't bring corpses back to life.

well I didn't mean that piece had something to do with emissions. That was just a story explaining why I was asking about Cali Emissions. I'm just wondering what I can SAFELY take off like the smog pump. I just want my car to be less dependant on all the electronical things. Is there anything that I could do without (something that alot of people do to there cars maybe). Im fairly new to the 'mod' and 'tuning' scene and I am very eager to learn everything I can. Please just bare with me im a newbie to these things

oh and a big for your reply. About that check valve, should I buy another one and put it on? If so were can I get one and for how much?

Yes you should definitely replace the valve. I think you can get it in the Help! section at AZ and elsewhere. It's not real expensive... like less than $10 IIRC.

There's little or nothing to be gained by just taking stuff off. I'd suggest starting out modding your car, by finding out what its first "weakest" point is, and fixing that; then the next; then the next; etc.

In the case of a TBI car, which sounds like what you've got, the SINGLE WORST FEATURE, is the exhaust system. EVERY PIECE, from the heads to the bumper, needs to be replaced, AS AN ASSEMLBY; that is, you don't want ANYTHING that will bolt up to ANYTHING you already have. If it fits a TBI 305, you don't want it. Instead, get yourself a good quality set of chassis-specific headers such as SLP or Edelbrock; a good quality high-flow cat; and the cat-back exhaust of your choice, for something like a TPI 350 in your year. Change it ALL out ALL at once.

The next "weakest" point about that setup, is the cam; then the gears; then the heads. Although, it's easier to swap cam & heads at the same time, since you have to take so much of the same stuff apart to do either one. Also, a better torque converter can make a big improvement if yours is an auto.

There's no significant difference from Cali to non-Cali emissions on most thirdgens, yours included. Dont concern yourself with it.

its really crazy how strict california's emssions laws are compared to up here in maine. Do you guys from cal. and other states really have to go through with all that stuff?

CA emissions arent that bad at all.

I have had to get 3 cars through myself (im still kinda young )

85 Maxima, 87 Fifth Ave. and my 85 ta

Most recently my TA, with a fresh engine swap (350, didnt tell them that though ) passed with amazing numbers. My stepdads new nissan has worse numbers than this thing. came in with 50-80% less than the ave for the state and 70-95% less than max numbers.

Keep in mind, this is with the same old cat (about 5 years old), and everything still hooked up (EFE Valve is gone haha)

all on a dyno test btw.

The chrysler passed with OEM cat... 1987. New bosch 02 and 5 year old plugs/wires. Wasnt great numbers, but it passed.

Re: California Emissons?!

EFE valve = a spacer looking thing with a vacuum diaphragm on it, between the outlet of the pass side exhaust manifold and the Y-pipe

Re: California Emissons?!

I'd use brass plugs. The AIR tubes are actually straight thread, but the appropriate size NPT (tapered pipe thread) fitting will fit and form in real nice, and wont be impossible to remove down the road. IIRC its 1/8" NPT.

Re: California Emissons?!

Wow thanks, ill look into it. Also it appears that the air tubs will come out as a whole unit. If all 8 air tubes are disconnected wil their be anything else to unbolt? Thanks alot -Rev
