Hey everyone, I am building a 70's 350 4 bolt to put in my 82 z28. I bought a oil pan from GM for a 1979 Camaro (due to the dipstick-it needs to be on the left side) for 87.00 dollars. It didnt' come in box and has some minor scratches and no baffle in the bottom so I don't think I want it. Will this year and application clear 'my' K member? What aftermarket pans have you had good luck with ie. NO leaks ? I know I bought a one piece pan gasket back in the day for my 305 and can't remember who made it. Anyone know of any one piece rubber gaskets they have had good luck with? I know felpro makes a nice valve cover gasket I am going to purchase . Also is it adviseable to run a cam button or cam thrust washers with a edelbrock performer rpm hydrolic flat tappet camshaft? Thanks much!!!

summit has nice chrome ones for $30, or you can get a moroso gold style one for the big $$. Unless it's a giant pan meant for a truck, it should clear your k member.

You shouldn't need a fancy 1pc gasket, espescially with a new pan that isn't warped on the bolt holes. Just install it right and it won't leak.

Yes that pan will fit your car.

It has no baffle, because it's designed to be used with a windage tray. I have used it before, except I use the Moroso windage tray (Teflon-coated) rather than the GM one. I believe the Milodon "Diamond Stripper" thing will also fit in it.

It's a good pan, good choice for the application, I'd suggest keeping it and using it.

No you do not need a cam button or any of that with a flat tappet cam.

That's got to be one of the worst cams you could possibly pick. Why on earth are you using that ancient generic POS that you're paying way too much for? If you're going to spend THAT kind of money, get something good instead of that crap. You'd probably get near 10% more power out of a XE274, and FAR better driveability and gas mileage to boot.

I've run 2 of the el cheap-o Summit 7qt pan and HV pump w/ pick up tube on my old 355 and 388, never a problem.

From experience, spend the extra one on the 1 piece pan gasket (dont have link but Summit/Jegs carry them) and1 piece Valve cover gasket

OR you could just buy this complete package and be done

Thanks for the replys. Why does this cam suck so bad? I thought it would work well with the rpm performer intake, flat top piston, ported and polished heads and headers??

it's an old lobe design. Many other cam manufacturers make it, and for cheaper, ie summit, elgin, etc. But stick an edelbrock sticker on the box and the price goes up. Edelbrock makes a lot of good products, but their flat tappet cams aren't one of them.

the lift is there, but you have very high duration @.050 to get that lift, indicating lazy ramp rates, also the gap between @.050" duration compared to the advertised is high, indicating again, lazy ramp rates.

compxe 274, lunati voodoo 60104 or the crane z-cam or powermax would be better

All of what he said. I completely agree...and I had an "RPM cam for a while. Much better is available for the price.

Personally? Well I don't have a lot of experience with cams, but if I was standing in your shoes, i'd use the lunati voodoo 60103 or 60104.
The 60103 is basically inbetween the comp xe 268 and xe274. The 60104 is a little bigger then the 274. Not sure the rest of your car, but I think if you were going with the edelbrock RPM cam, any of these cams will perform better.

I think they have the absolute most lift per duration in a hydraulic flat tappet, heck, very comparable to a solid, so they're the most aggressive lobes, and would make the most power.
The comp xe274 is extremely common, many members on this board have had great success with it. Crane's z-cams are also good, but not as popular around here.

241/249 eh? That's a big cam, need a bigger stall speed on the converter, and good heads to use it. Are you going for that?

Well it's a manual so stall speed isn't a big deal. Heads are ported and polished chev heads, I think 1.94 and whatever size the exhaust is. I would like some different heads down the road. Do you think that's a bad idea?

I think that's a bit too agressive of a cam, it'll be pretty racey. Without details on the heads, it's kinda hit or miss how well it'll work. I think you should go with a smaller cam to be on the safe side though.
