I believe that is a vaccuum reserve canister. probably runs to the heater controls. provides a vacuum soruce so when the motor is floored, and essentially loses vacuum, your heat settings do not change. not really a neccesary componet, but not really hurting performance either.

"The globe of death" is what i usually hear it referred to as...
Reserve canister so you can still operate HVAC and other vacuume goodies when you go WOT when the engine is producing very little vacuume!

it's the orb of power......and my 84 had 2.....lol.....m-pha-sis.....had. there was the one under the charchole canister(evap canister), and a brick on the firewall.......one was for brakes and all and the other for the meat/a/c control, but now all but the brakes are gone so lets see how the brakes work with the new motor though I might add the orb back in

So are you saying that at WOT, (if i have my heat blowing on its highest speed), that it will not blow as hard if i remove the orb of power?

It won't effect the fan speed.
Your environment controls are vaccum controlled, remove all vaccum and your heater plenium will deflect all air to the Windshield. So at WOT with no vaccum back up the air will go to the windshield.

The most important thing is that it gives you one or two power-assisted pumps on the brakes if the engine cuts out so that you can stop. After that it's quad-powered (as in your thigh muscles).
You might notice if you're sitting there with the engine off and you move the HVAC selector you'll hear hissing and movement. That's the flaps being opened/closed actuated by the reserve vacuum. Eventually you won't be able to move it around anymore until you've run the car and built up some more vacuum.
Leave it in. The convenience far outweighs any benefits you'd get from removing it.
