problems after replacing lifters

First off, I own a 1989 Camaro RS with a 305 and a five speed. This however is not about my third gen. I put new lifters in my 84 Monte Carlo and now after I put everything back together, I cannot get it to start up. I've got the timing almost right, but it still doesn't want to run by itself. It is also a 305 with a q-jet on top. I was wondering if not torquing down the rocker arms correctly would make it run as bad as it does. Or maybe some vacumn lines didn't get put back correctly? It lopes really bad and backfires through the carberator sometimes. I'm quite frustrated as it is my only way of getting around and I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks

If you torque too much you can accually keep the valves always open causing no start. I would loosen them up alot. OR Could be way too loose and would need to be a tad tightened.

if you don't set valve lash properly, your car will run AWFUL.

Rocker arms don't get "torqued" at all. If you search for "valve lash" you'll come up with a number of ways to set them up properly.
