Engines knocking need advice
Need some advice seems like I am going to need an engine.
I dont want to rebuild this one. Just did a T-5 swap also.
I also have another rear 342 open thats in good shape in my yard.
I wanted to keep this camaro since its a hard top and chassis
isnt rotted away.
I was looking at the reman 305 80-85 on ebay I know its not alot of
power but I just need to get to work with decent gas milage
for now..

why not wander down to GM and grab one of their el-cheapo low HP crate motors if you dont want big HP?
their nothing special but at least you got a 36month/100,000mile warranty!

the low power needs for now isn't a good reason to get another 305, it'd be very close to the same price to get a 350, then you can always get more power later with upgrades. (more power then you would with the same upgrades on the 305).

cheap and GM can belong in the same sentence. so long as it doesnt have anything to do with the shop...
IMO when you can go to GM, BS the parts guy for a bit and walk out with one of them gutless crate motors for under $1500ca that have a 3 year warranty its not that bad of a deal!

well i've been price raped by service and parts, so I can't really agree with you.
However, if I would have known I could have gotten a brand spankin' new 350 (albeit low perf), for $1500CA, I woulda jumped on that like a fat kid on a smartie.

you know what . I just had a engine rebuilt . It gets better milage than my old 305 did . If you can get into tuneing , you can make them fairly good on gas IMO ( I drive two V-8's now )

If it's knocking, why not locate the bad part, replace it and call it a day. Save your money for your next motor.

I cant do it no place to work I did the rearend and t5 in the street.
I dont want to keep driving it like this its very annoying.
I put around 2k miles on it like this..didnt get worse kinda wierd..but
Im sure its the motor now since after I took out the tranny it still made
that same sound at idle but goes away and comes back and gets stronger
when driving..

I had a spun main bearing that sounded similar to what youre describing. If that is the case, you cant just fix it in the car...the block would need to be line bored and a new crank would be needed more than likely. If youre lucky you can keep driving it until you figure out what youre going to do, but it could go at any time.

I took it today to the local speed shop the guys who are into
muscle and drag racing, he was nice enough to go for a ride with me.
He also checked it out from the engine bay before we left..
He said no way its an engine knock but he couldnt tell me what it was..
I told em I just did the 5 speed swap and when I had the tranny out
it still made that noise, he didnt know what it was either..
He said I could try to retard the timing perhaps the indicator is off
and im way to advanced..he also mentioned the exhaust well I checked
that, maybe my motor mounts? I dont know they did look dry and cracked a bit but the engine didnt move when it made that sound at around 2000rpms
sitting at the curb..
I asked him a couple of more questions like maybe the cam? or some
other stuff just thrown out there fuel pump distributor..
he did mention that its an older engine so I shouldnt expect it to run like glass.
Well after I thanked him for his time we shook hands and I left happy that it
wasnt a major problem but then again its still a mystery after all this time..
which buggs me ...I did get confident and did a burn out in 1st gear : )

ha, if I can get to a decent one during business hours i'd be ok. What do you pay for an idler pulley for your DOHC motor? Think a stealerships will sell me a panhard rod nut for under $12? I don't actually *need* to buy much at a dealership, so the few things I do, I just suck it up and pay the big bills. Otherwise I avoid it like the plague.

There's always Saturday.
The places I dealt with would tell me when an aftermarket part was cheaper, then they'd phone NAPA or PartSource or whoever and have the part delivered over for me while I sat at the counter and drank coffee and BS'ed waiting for it to arrive.

back of the engine? have you checked the starter and flywheel bits? something could have broken off, and is flopping around. Probably not a huge hassle to pull your trans and check it out...

It made the sound with the flexplate on and the auto tranny out
also made it with the flywheel on when I swapped it for the t5..
Guess to further investigate I have to get it up on the ramps again
and have someone it the throttle until it comes..Ive dont it before
awhile ago and couldnt figure it out..
Its inexplicable to say the least..
