Water Temp gauge problems

I have an 88 Camaro originally a v6. It has been swapped out in favor of a carbed 97 model 5.7 Everything has been rewired and runs great.

The water temp however doesnt work right. It has a new sensor, (cant remember if we used one from a 88 with v8 or v6). Sometimes when the car is first started the gauge works and seems to read acurately. But once you cut the switch off, it usually will start back up on 100 degrees and stay there not working.

To make a long story short, sometimes it works, sometimes it dont. Could it be just the gauge? Can the gauges be changed without changing the whole cluster? Thanks

Brad

Well first off the sensor has to be for the original motor of the car as to not run into calibration issues. So a 88 V6 sensor would be correct, im not sure if the V8 is the same, i would assume so.

The actual gauge can be replaced in the dash without replacing the whole cluster.

I am pretty sure that the right sensor is used. I have put two new sensors in it so I am sure it isnt the sensor. So you think the gauge could be bad?
