Why does my starter keep going bad?

Just like the titlr says. Why does my starter keep going bad.I have a stock 91 RS that i,ve had for about a year and i've already replaced the starter 3 times.Once with a mini hi torque and twice with Napa starters.I've brought it into my mechanic and he says everything looks fine. What could be burning up my starters?

All your wiring in good order? Im assuming you don't have headers (heat can cause all sorts of problems).

What about heat shields? The same question as CamarosRUS, but heat soak on the starter leads to a quick death.

Are the teeth meshing correctly with the flywheel? You might want to check clearances betwixt the starter gear and flywheel. You didn't specify what exactly was failing, so this is a WAG.

If a starter is overheated does it die or just lose power? I can turn my newly built 383 strocker over without plugs in, but once I install the plugs it hardly moves. I have a Powermaster XS Torque Starter, which is rated to an 18 to 1 compersion ratio, I calculate 10 to 1. Have I Smoked the starter?

I work at a Napa so thats where I get all my parts. That said, the starters they sell for our cars are crap. There are 3 different lines of starters you can buy. I've tried them all. The last one was a brand new, not rebuilt, not remanufactured unit. When it cranks its great, its all the times I turn the key and get click click click that arent. It always starts but theres a bad spot in the solenoid. The last 2 starters, from 2 different lines had this same issue. I've even added a relay to direct power straight from the battery to it. No change, no voltage drop when it happens either. Finally managed to get a voltmeter hooked up when the problem occurred.. 12.5v. good ground etc.

Now the 3 or so starters before these last 2 had different problems. Seems a bunch of starters got crappy drive gears. They didnt bevel the teeth, so unless the gears meshed perfectly the first time, all you got was a spinning grinding noise as the teeth collided. Finally ended up taking my old drive and putting it in the new starter. Solved that problem... till that starter motor died.
