05' MPFI 5.7 eating distributor gears help
Well I may not be quite on the right forum but I would appreciate it if someone could help me. The motor is in a 2005' Thunderjet boat it's a marine power 350 330hp roller cam it spun the #3 rod bearing. I tore in down put a new crank, two new rods, had it hot tanked, new oil pump, basically new short block. Got it back together and it ran perfect for about an hour then started to misfire because of the dis gear starting to wear. I didn't catch it in time and it pumped the metal throughthe bearings. ........pulled motor, new bearings, back in, went and ran it for about five minutes and pulled the dis and it was starting to wear the new gear. Any Ideas? Oh ya, same block, heads, intake, cam, distributor Thanks Zac1

im not an expert, and mabe this is the wrong board to post. I do know that when you have a roller camshaft, you need a special type of Dist. gear. Normal gears for a flat tappet cam are made of a softer(i think) metal. Make sure you have them matched up correctly. And maybe, you need a cam bearing, it could be holding the camshaft at a slightly wrong angle. Let me kno what happens!

How bad is the distributor gear tore up? I would replace both gears to be on the safe side. Not as expensive as another complete rebuild.
