engine ticking
engine ticking
well i have a clip of my engine running. i put new lifters in it. and there is still a tick. i have the rockers ajusted properly. i am thinking it might be a pushrod how bent does it have to be to be this loud. i dont think it is a rod or main bearing. it is a fast tick. let me know what you think
Putfile - tick 50
Putfile - tick 50
ok, well i put new pushrods n cause i found a slightly bent one and still no fix. the oil pan is dented so could it be the oil pump? the oil pressure gaug doesnt work so i cant tell if there is good pressure. also how would i get that fixed? the engine is a 350 out of a 76 chevelle, where would the sensor be? thanks for the help

sensor is to the right of the distributor, when viewed from the front.
rent or buy a mechanical gauge, and hook it up there. Check your oil pressure first.

Im assuming the ticking goes with the rpms, right?
If youre positive its not the lifters, rockers or pushrods then you could possibly have spun a bearing, be it a cam or a crankshaft. I destroyed my last engine because I had a ticking noise and I thought it was the lifters, blew a rod through my oilpan

Needles to say I have a new engine now, which doesnt seem like such a bad thing to me now at least, but seeing your car sit dead in front of your house for a year isnt worth it.
MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE BEARINGS.
thats what my engine sounded like :\

After listening to that file a few more times, ill put money on it that its the bearings. Drain/change your oil, check for metal flakes. What you are hearing is the absence of a bearing that goes inbetween the crankshaft and the rod that a pistons attached to. That rod is smacking against the crankshaft, thats what that "ticking" noise is.
If you find metal flakes in your oil, I would suggest pulling your engine out and digging in. If you dont check your bearings and it turns out that its the culprit, say good bye to your engine.
Sorry for being pessimistic :\

I agree it sounds like bearings. Check your oil, cut the filter open look for metal and check that oil pressure. My first 350 sounded like that and I thought it was a lifter. Later, the rod sticking out the oil pan toold me I was wrong.

Dont start your engine untill you have assessed that its NOT the bearings, and you are 110% sure.
thanks guys, ill drain my oil tonight and check for metal. if it was the bearing would it always be ticking. it doesnt start ticking untill the engine is warm probably 5 minutes or so. it sounds normal when its cold. thanks ill let you know what the oil looks like

This is what happened to me:
Bought an 84 Z28 for 1500.
Drove it.
Got the oil changed.
Waited about three weeks.
Was at my girlfriends house at 3am. Driving home on the freeway not being very nice to my car. TICK TICK TICK... **** WHAT IS THAT.
Get home, car dies. ****!!
ripped apart my engine, got as far as taking the heads off. Some of the lifters were stuck in there holes and had to be pulled out by vicegrips. Replaced the lifters thinking that it was the problem. Put moter back together, with ported heads and a brand new performer rpm intake. Got it running, didnt notice the ticking, AWESOME! Driving it around the block, all of a sudden there that ticking noise is again and its even worse! wtf? 10 seconds later my car makes a violent noise and it dies in its tracks. Car doesnt turn over. ****
Put car in neutral, start pushing, and I see a big huge streak of oil following me all the way to my house. I get home and I see a giant hole in my oil pan, I go back to where it died and I see a piece of rod, maybe 3 1/2 inches long.

You get the idea.
I would honestly recomend pulling out your engine and rebuilding it with new bearings/rings/cam/lifters. Youre goign to spend a lot more money than just that if you leave this problem untreated *which im assuming you wont*
