MAF or not MAF

Hello everyone

I am new to this forum so I'd like to introduce myself...My name is Dave Hill I reside in Michigan, I'm married with two children and have a mistress (1986 Trans Am) on the side, And I have been a Trans Am lover most of my life...I have owned a '78...'79 T/A a '87 Formula and my current ride the '86 T/A

Now to buisness...My Trans Am has a problem that is kickin' my butt...With the MAF sensor plugged in the car runs like crap, but unplug the sensor and it runs great with good fuel economy and tons of power...Also the engine light DOES NOT come on untill the MAF is unplugged...I purchased a Pontiac dealer service manual for the 1986 Firebird on e-bay and after running some tests I got nowhere!...acording to the service manual everything checks out!!!!!!...has anyone else experienced this problem...I'd appreciate any help I could get!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

check the wiring and all but if its running good with the MAF sensor unplugged than you probably just need to buy a new one.

Replace both MAF relays and call it PM. Reset the computer and 3 out of 5 you have no more problem. (So long as the pins and wires, etc. aren't fubared)

The MAF burn-off relay seems to be working it is energizing when you ground it...There is another MAF relay other than the burn-off????????

Yes. There is a MAF power relay. If you are standing in front of the car looking at the relay pack, I believe it the one to the far left, on top of the ESC.

Cycle the relay or swap it with a known good one like the burn off one, or go get a new one for the toolbox and have at it. The burnoff and power relays many times are the same and on some years they are the same as the fuel pump relay as well.
