Smoke, lots of smoke

My engine blows blue/white smoke at startup and under hard acceleration, but not while cruising. Startup is the worst. Checked my compression, and lowest 172, highest 184. The car sat for some time and when I drove it about 150 miles on the freeway is when it started smoking. Thinking it may be bad valve seals, does this sound right?

More info? Carb/mpfi/tpi? 2.5, 2.8, 5.0, 5.7? What does it smell like? Where does it come from? etc etc

Its got a 5.0 I think, I was told that it was changed to a 350 with a lunati cam, but I have not been able to verify this yet. It has an Edelbrock carb, and it is definately burning oil, I can smell that, and it is out of the tail pipe. The engie runs strong, has good acceleration, it just smokes.

Okay, the bickering is all fun, but my car still smokes. I don't understand computer controlled cars very well, but I know motors. My gut tells me that the valve seals got dry from sitting for ever, and my trip bringing it home just put the final end to them. HOWEVER, this cars wiring got fried at one point in time, and it no longer uses a computerized carb, nor is the smog pump or cat converter there. Out of the rear of the passenger side valve cover is a big tube that goes to the air cleaner, it lets out a very minute amount of smoke, on the drivers side is a pcv valve that was not hooke up to anything, so I put a vaccume line from it to the base of the carb.

Sooooooo,

Am I barking up the wrong tree, or is it an emmisions thing screwing with block pressure, or .....

I am sure you meant the carb area, IE block pressure?

Im gonna agree with you on the valve stem seals. However that tube that runs from the valve cover to the air cleaner is from the pcv valve. Smoke from there tells me that you have some blow-by ( some of the gas from combustion is getting past the rings and into the crankcase also some oil is getting into the combutsion chamber and burning with the fuel which gets pushed back past the rings and comes thru the pcv valve). '

If the smoking is bothering you I would suggest going the easy route and just getting new valve stem seals and replacing them. You should be able to change them out in an afternoon. That will take care of that problem. If you are still getting blowby thru then the only thing that would fix that would most likely be a re-ring of the engine. Blow by itself is not horrible. It is a sign of the rings not being sealed and the combustion gasses will make the oil break down more quickly so if you dont keep the oil changed it can cause problems in that area.

Hey, did you grease the bearings in the muffler? And, did you make sure to install 2 transmissions? You know our cars need 2 transmissions all of the time... >.<

Sounds like valve stem seals to me too. I had the same problem with my old heads so I just bought a new set...of heads. But to second what wesdog said, replace your valve stem seals, and that ought to fix it. If not, you've got blowby.

Great, thanks for all the help, I will give it a shot, maybe with the valve covers off, I can see the numbers on the back of the block and see what it is. I think it is a 350 out of an 88 IROC, which I got with the car. I can also tell by the heads, unless some duffas put 305 heads on a 350 block, hmmm with what I nave seen so far, maybe I should check the block.

I would check the block. There are plenty of people that have put 305 heads on 350 blocks to increase CR.

You could run a compression test to check if your rings are bad.. if I'm not mistaken?
