engine cast # question

ok i know i got skrewed but i will live on to see anouther day
i was told my 87 iroc was a tpi that blew up and was switched with a 4 bolt mail 350 but i didnt check the numbers because the car was running when i went to get it and didnt want to stick my hand back there when it was hot
so any ways i took his word for it and got the car
well i got the car home and let it cool off and checked the numbers it is a 86 305 i was wondering if it could be the origional block for the car it is a 87 iroc z28 but would it have a 86 engine in it or a 87 ?

engines and parts were cast a few months before the bulding of the car, so its possible that the casting of the engine is 86 sure, if the car is an early 87 especially

is it a centerbolt head engine or ?

give us numbers off front flat stamping pad of the block under the alternator, and also the casting code off back of block if possible

the front stamping code will do it though

search on google for this:

nastyz28.com suffix codes

is it true that the tbi engines were all roller motors?
the heads and the intake were changed i think it had the four valve cover bolts around the outside and a edelbrock performer rpm intake (highrise alum.) and a 750 meh. secondarys carb i was told

305 in 1986

what heads are on it ? 86 older or 87-95 ?

i bet the engine is not original to the car

another way to know real quick is there should be the last 7 digits of the vin code stamped on the front pad of the engine under the alternator, it should match up with the last digits of the car's vin code

if its original

good luck

The '86 block is unique because it had flat tappet lifters like the earlier years but was the first year for the one-piece rear main seal that carried on in later years.

It is possible to have a leftover '86 block in an '87 model chassis, but the different VIN #'s is a pretty clear indication the engine was swapped out and the older one put in.

In f-bodies yes, for trucks no. However, all TBI blocks should have roller provisions cast into them (A few bosses that need to be tapped).
