engine casting number

just want to verify, can anyone tell me what year/model this engine came from and if it is a hydraulic roller block as opposed to flat tappet? casting number is; 14093338

I looked it up on MorTec but couldn't find a match. Thanks.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re-check the number. Most likely, it's a 638.

If it's a 638, it's a 350; 86 - 95.

The casting # won't tell you if it's a roller or not, because that's a machining process that may or may not have been applied after the casting process. Truck and Caprice (TBI) blocks in most years got that block but were not equipped with roller cams; some other motors such as the L98 were.

Same for the next question, which will be, is it a 4-bolt main. Some blocks were equipped with 4-bolt main caps (trucks, maybe Covettes) but ones in cars generally were not.

your correct, it was a typo. according to mortec only corvettes got the 4-bolt main.

this engine in particular was pulled from an '89 firebird which had the L98 option and TPI... what are the chances this will be a roller block, and not a flat tappet?

Also if it is a flat tappet, can it easily be converted to roller by changing the lifters, or is machining nessessary?

you need a kit to convert it to roller if its not, but its probably roller already, hard to say for sure thouh without looking

you have to drill and tap bolt holes in the front of the block to bolt the cam retainer to

if this was the stock motor in that firebird, and I think there's a good chance it is, then it's a roller block, with roller lifters, and roller cam. (assuming you're buying all those goodies with the block).
