Ping/Knock - How to tell?

Hey guys, nothing is wrong with my car... but I have always wondered what is this "knock" and "ping" sound that some people talk about. does anyone have a video/sound clip of this, and how to listen for it?

also another question:
how do i check for all of my cylinders hitting, and everything working fine on the engine? should i have a shop check it out? and, how much would they normally charge? 1 hour, 2 hours? etc.

It probably wouldn't be prominent enough to record, but it basically sounds like a rapid clicking from under the hood. That's the best I could describe it.....

Oh yes, it can be recorded if it's bad enough! It'll scare the **** out of you the first time you hear it, rattles like ****! Sounds like a handful of nuts loose in the engine.. You'll not be wanting to expose the engine to much more than a few seconds of that kind of torture.. It can come on gradually or more abruptly as you increase the load on the engine.

thanks also, can anyone answer my second question? I do have a v6, but it shouldn't be this slow... my grandma's van can out run my car it's also got a v6 (3.1), but i have to do about 1500-2000 rpm more than her to match her speed. it's retarded. anyways, let me know.

Re: the second question. Read the plugs. I think there have been a few good wite ups on here over the years. If you are worried about the cylinders, do a compression or a leakdown test. Same there with regard to write ups. hth.
