I'm gonna set it on fire!!

I'm having a pretty frustrating time with an '87 IROC. When we got the car, it needed a fuel pump. I replaced it, and it popped out of the holder in the tank afterward, so I took it all apart again and repaired it. The car ran fine for about 5-10 minutes, then screwed up again. It wouldn't run after about 10 minutes of driving. This time when I took the pump out, it was still in place. I clamped it to make sure it wasn't coming lose from the fuel line this time. The problem is that it was running fine, until I mashed the throttle to the floor, then it just bogged down until I let up on it, and now it's acting like the pump isn't pumping any fuel again. I can hear the pump running, but it's not wanting to run right. It's almost like it's got very little fuel going to the rail. WTF?? Anybody wanna buy an IROC for cheap??

Can you test your fuel pressure at the fuel rail?

I'm sure I could, but don't have a gauge to put on it.

when you can, test your pressure. have you changed the fuel filter along with the pump?

if that's a yes, you may have a bad regulator, or a sticky injector or two.

Filter is ruled out. I just went out and disconnected the fuel line and tested for fuel pump output, and it's putting out plenty of fuel. Haven't checked the pressure yet, though. I hooked the line back up, and it started up (letting it idle in the driveway and revving it now and then) and it ran fine for about 2-3 minutes, then started sputtering out again. At least now I know I don't have to drop the tank--AGAIN!! What now?!?!

what you did didnt rule out the fuel filter, what may appeat to be plenty of fuel may not really be enough when it comes to actual pressure. unless you are building this car with welfare checks, replace the damn $10 filter before you go any farther. and lets not hear another excuse to not replace the filter. just to be clear, we are talkin about the inline filter, not the one on ther pump in the tank. Good LUck!

The filter is 2 weeks old, that's why I ruled it out. I noticed that when the car first runs, the pump is nice and quiet, but after running a few minutes, it starts getting pretty loud, kind of like it's straining. Could this be a faulty fuel pressure regulator not letting fuel bypass the rail, and not letting any return to the tank? That would make sense to me, as the car acts like it's flooding out when it starts acting up.

We'll take $1400 from the first person to walk up with the cash. Blue , '87 IROC-Z, clear title, 350 TPI, rebuilt auto trans w/shift kit, t-tops, and factory IROC wheels in good condition. It's going to need some work, but we just need it gone ASAP 'cause we don't have the time to fool with it any more.
