Intermittent Ticking
Anyone out there ever dealt with a carbed 305 with an intermittant ticking sound. It sometimes will start with the motor under load and sometimes just sitting there idleing, no ryme or reason to it at all. It sound like its coming from the lower half of the motor or where the tranny meets the motor. Its not an exhuast leak (I was hoping thats all it was). The motor runs very strong, although it has 122k on it. Any ideas?
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

Thanks!! I will check that out. Based on your experience, will I be able to tell if it is cracked or damaged by pulling just the bellhousing? Or will I need to drop the tranny to do a good inspection?

Speaking of intermittent noise...
My car has had one for seven years. Comes and goes just like our buddy's noise, but NEVER [yet], at idle. It disappeared all last winter. Not a tick, but a noise more like exhaust leak, or the cooling fan gently hitting the shroud. A few weeks after cleaning up my exhaust, the noise became more or less constant. I say this because the exhaust near the engine is now more or less free of soot, as we are now running lean. Soot can fill holes in the exhaust. I have no clue. When I pulled the twin down-pipe down two years ago, I found little evidence to support my theory that the shaft on the heat-riser is leaking. I am at a loss, and will need a looney bin soon, if this is not resolved.
When listening from inside, the noise appears to eminate from the right footwell, but sticking my head out the window, the noise is very much quieter, and hard to pinpoint.

Sorry for the delayed response, I have been very very busy lately. I checked the flexplate/flywheel and all was fine. I decided to then start tearing into the motor and come to find out it was a sloppy timing chain slapping against the timing cover. Replaced the cam gear, crank gear and timing chain, at the same time replaced the fuel pump and greased the pump pushrod (had to pull fuel pump to remove motor mount bolts and the arm looked kind of oddly worn). Put everything back together and the motor runs nice and quiet and much smoother too.
Thanks
Chris

Wow, a loose timing chain caused the ticking?
I think I may have that problem. There is a ticking at idle, but after I give some gas it goes away. I was thinkin loose rockers but shouldn't that get louder as the engine speed increases?
Good job on pinpointing the problem!

I have my AIR removed except for the air pump is still on the engine and runs on the belt. That DEFINETELY adds a ticking sort of sound, but it isn't the same as the sound I'm hearing at idle.
Plus, I had the sound before I removed the AIR system.
I'm not telling you it isn't your AIR, I just wanted to add that if the AIR system is leaking it will cause a ticking sort of sound, but it has a different sound than what I am hearing at idle.

man, i wish i knew what was causing the clicking and ticking noise in my car too. i just finished doing an intake change to an edelbrock and i hear a loud clicking from the interior. when i raise the hood i cant hear it out there, just inside the car.....really strange, but i parked it in my garage until i find out what it is.

That sounds more like an exhaust leak. Usually you can hear the smaller pinhole leaks better inside the car because when you try and listen under the hood the other normal engine noise drowns it out. Try this as a test, put the car in drive and brake tourque it, if it is exhaust the noise should become more pronounced because that puts the engine under load. Let me know how it turns out.

I have been too busy to even do the p.s. pump. Came from AGR last week. Need to install before winter. The present unit runs dry in seconds.
Anyway, 86_Z28 has just said something that makes sense. After the pump, I will give it a try.
P.S., the fuel pump and pushrod are new. AIR system is temporarily w/o the belt, to eliminate this as the noise. At one time or other, every darn thing on the engine, except the alternator and water pump, has been temporarily removed in an effort to find the ******** noise.
THANKS,
Seth

sounds like everyones is doing it, i had someone tell me it might be the bearing in the waterpump but its not that old... timing chain does seem to make sense, that pretty hard to do yourself?
