Power range on ZZ9 cam?

Anyone happen to know the power range on a TPIS ZZ9 cam? I'm finishing up on the IROC to run at the track next Friday. I have driven it a little, but without the gear swap done, or the MSD. It doesn't seem to run too bad I guess. A bunch of my friends are also taking their cars down. I guess I'm just a lil worried that it won't perform as well as I want it.

Peak torque around 3500 RPM and peak power between 5000-5500 RPM if your intake can support it. You'll want to try shift points between 5000-5500 RPM is you're running a long tube runner TPI. You can spin it higher with an intake designed to support higher RPMs like a Super Ram, HSR, mini-ram, etc.

I have a 383 with 220cc AFR's and an RPM air gap intake. The block's got all high dollar stuff in it. Callies crank, JE pistons, oliver rods, afr hydra-rev kit....

ZZ9 is really small for this application. It will be very streetable but if you're looking for max performance you can really step up the cam size.

I agree with both of Marks posts. I'm currently running the ZZ9 cam in my combo and it is doing just fine. See my signature. Idles great and with good power. Some say it sounds almost stock. However with my current new build up I have stepped up a good notch in my cam selection.

That being said there are better cams on the market these days. I would go for one no less than 224 degrees of duration on the intake side if I was building a 383. However with those heads you need to go larger. I would say no less than a 230 degree cam on the intake. Also get one that will give good lift. Say .600" or so. Remember lift is you friend when it comes to horsepower. One cam among many to look at is the Comp Cams XFI cam with 230 degrees of intake duration. Hope this helps.

Tonite is the first nite I ran it all out. I ran a buddy w/ a 5.0 GT with just exhaust i think. Of course I left him sitting. Then I ran a Nova that's supposed to run 12.80's @ the track. Both times I just blew the tires off. The second time was worst. I didn't even move at first, even peddling it. He had me by at least 6 cars, but once I started movin' it looked about even.

1989gtatransam, what rpm are you shifting at? I don't know yet if it's a fuel issue or the cam running outta umph or what, but when I hit 6K it starts breaking up. Spitting and sputtering. IDK yet. Hafta mess w/ it tomorrow. Thanx for the info guys !

I have my transmission set up to shift at 6000rpm in the 1-2 shift and 5600rpm for the 2-3 shift. With my next build up I will probably add a few hundred rpm to that depending on what my dyno sheet says. You want the most power under the curve. Heck I might even go to a 4L60E to get perfect shifts. Trying to see how close I can get to a 11.99 run for the next go around.
