One possibility is the fuel pump isn't coming on until you build up oil press. The fuel pump relay is supposed to run the fuel pump (for a few seconds) as soon as the key is turned to the "on" position. If the relay fails, there's a back-up way to power the pump; that's by using a oil press switch down by the oil filter.
If the relay fails, the eng will start after it's been cranked long enough to build up oil press.
Do you hear the fuel pump run for 3-5 seconds when key is turned to the run position?

Babybear82, It sounds like your timing chain might be going out. To check this remove the dizzy cap and turn the crank back and forth. The rotor cap should move everytime you turn the carnk. If this does not happen, the timing chain is loose and causing you to have to turn the car over a lot before starting.
