880 block max bore?

880 block max bore?
I have a 880 block that I've done a 383 stroker in with a 4.030 bore. Its one piece rear main and has the provisions for roller cam. Anyone know what the max bore is for this block? Wondering if 4.060 bore is possible without any reliability and driveability issues.

Yea, sonic test first. Are you absolutely sure you need to rebore it .030" ? If it really really NEEDS to be bored out, might be ok with another .010"...

No, .010 over would be fine....the .030 bore only has 34k on it. But if I put new pistons in it...the difference in price from the .040 is $550. The .060 is $300 for forged. I have hyper's now and they ain't worth the hassle. Could I keep the .030 bore and run new forged pistons. I've always run syntheic oils and the cly. walls looked good 10k ago when I put my AFR heads on it.

Yea, you might be able to just re-hone the cylinders, and throw in the forged. Ask a machinist to be sure though, usually forged runs larger wall gaps, so i'm not sure if that means the piston will be smaller, or if it means you bore out the cylinders larger (4.033 say).

Yea....I'm on a college budget so...i want the best but got to watch the wallet as well esp. if I want to put a new cam in it as well. Thanks for the help.

I agree. With only 34K you probably just need to rehone the existing bore. I was able to do that on my current motor and it had 67000 miles on it.

A machine shop? Bout the same as boring, it's mostly in the setup fee.
Do it yourself? The 3 stone version cost me ~$30. ballhone is a bit more $.

From a machine shop most likely that way he can balance it with the new pistons. Also, how much cam can I run with the stock converter? I have a 218/224 right now. So, how much more can I run? I'll be putting a stall in later with a built tranny but one thing at a time.

So you've got the xe262? That's pretty much the limit on a stock convertor. (in a 350 though...)
You might as well go bigger on the cam now, that's a very tame cam in a 383. It won't be "undriveable" until you get a better stall, just a bit sluggish at low RPM.
Try the xe274, that's a good one.

I have the xm262h....218/224 hyd. flat tappet cam. Sluggish I can do until I get my stall, but could I go bigger than a 274hr or is that pushing it. I am wanting to convert to a hyd. roller cam this time. Its not sluggish at the moment to me...it would be faster and funnier to drive with the 3k stall but its fine right now.

Are you willing to buy new valve springs?
If you're swapping to a retrofit roller cam, and you've got decent heads, and you're getting a bigger stall soon, then yea, i'd go even bigger. Maybe an xr282h. If the heads can support it, that is. And you'd probably (most likely) need different valve springs and whatnot.

I have AFR 180cc heads. I'll be swapping valve springs for the cam. So, a bigger cam will be ok with the stock stall until I get a new one.

Yea, it'll just be a bit sluggish. You'll have to turn up the idle speed screw a bit.
The AFR180cc heads are borderline too small for a huge cam. I mean, AFR knows how to get the most out of 180cc's, thats for damn sure, but it's not ideal to go huge, since it's a 383.
Perhaps an xr276h would be better. That's one step smaller.

Awesome news...that's what I wanted to hear. I will have a custom cam built from Camshaft Innovations for the HSR since he helped Holley design it and do some of the dyno testing with it. Probably about 226/232 with .525 lift. Then....start saving for my stall and tranny! Thanks again for the help!
