head bolts and rocker studs?
Im getting ready to put my heads on...
what should I use under the head bolts? Oil? what should I use? I called ARP and they told me to use their moly lube but I dont feel like waiting a week to get it from Cali. So where can I get some? AZ or Advance doesnt carry it.. Can I just use oil? ARP says that will change the torque reading on it..
rocker stud? what do I use to seal those? some red loctite? for high temp?
thanks!

go to a parts store and just use some white grease. Oil will also work fine. You just need something under there to avoid friction. friction will cause an inncorrect torque reading.
rocker studs will need arp thread sealer to avoid having antifreeze come up through the threads. You are talking about the screw in rocker studs correct?

yeah they are ARP screw in rocker studs...but do I have to use ARP stuff? I dont feel like waiting for them to send me the sealer.
Cant I just use something from the parts store? it has to be something that kinda locs the bolts in..correct?

Blue locktite will work on the rocker studs as well as some pipe dope. You just need to seal the rocker studs from the coolant passage. Just make sure that the studs and the threaded holes are clean. Otherwise they will probably not seal up and you will get water in the oil.
RJT was right that oil or white grease will work in place of the ARP moly lube. You just need to avoid the friction to prevent false torque readings. Just about anything will work.

The ARP moly lube is the same as Crane/Isky Cam break in paste. Silvery/blacky looking moly paste. (Moly Disulfide grease)
Moly slip call it what you want. White grease is not the same. its a water based grease, not a high pressure anti friction moly lube.
Personally I use black permetex gasket maker on the bolts. Never had a leaky bolt or a blown head gasket. Can't be that bad.
Don't use white grease. Its for lubing the roller wheels on your roll up garage door.
Crane cams
Part No. 99002-1 -- Two 1-ounce packages

ARP didn't include a pack of lube with the bolts?
Are you using washers on the head bolts as well?
Thread sealant (aka pipe dope) is what you want to use on the rocker studs. RTV will work as well.
I think I used sealant on the head bolt threads also, since some (all?) go into the water jacket.
A little bottle of Permatex thread sealant will do ya.

Head bolts go DIRECTLY into the water jacket of a stock block. All of them. If you don't put sealer on the threads, you WILL have 34 coolant leaks.
Use the Loctite automotive thread sealer with Teflon. It makes a good lube, and will not "disturb" torque settings. Not that it matters all that much; most people overtorque their head bolts anyway. I'd suggest using the sealer on both the threads, and under the heads where they meet the casting; and stick to the low end of the torque spec. I use 60 ft-lbs in steps; like 35, then 50, then 60, then go back over them all in order several times to make sure they're ALL at 60. In any case, DO NOT exceed 65; you WILL warp the head and cause the gasket to blow between cylinders, especially between the center 2.
Rocker studs go either into the water jacket in some heads, or into intake ports in others. A leak in either case is disastrous; you either leak coolant into the crankcase like the head bolts do, or you leak oil into the intake ports. Use the same sealer, and a torque of about 55 ft-lbs.
Whatever you do, DO NOT use grease, or assembly lube, on EITHER kind of hardware!!!! You WILL have leaks. Guaranteed. Likewise, DO NOT use thread locker; it's unnecessary, ineffective, and doesn't provide a seal to prevent leaks.

I usually get it at VatoZone or Advance, myself. Yes, they carry it, even if the monkey behind the counter hasn't noticed it yet. I think I picked up a tube of it at Advance just a couple of weeks ago in fact. Comes in a little tube IIRC. Might be a Permatex product now, since P bought out L, merged their product lines somewhat, and changed alot of the product designations; I didn't pay alot of attention to what the label said.
If VatoZone, CSK, Poop Boys, etc. don't have it in stock in your area, try a REAL parts store like a Parts Plus or CarQuest or NAPA type of place.
Don't use the regular hardware store "pipe dope" like plumbers use. It's not good with the heat.

do as sofa has stated. I would have also suggested to use pipe sealer on the threads of the head bolts too, but the question was what to use under the bolt.
