I just replaced a 5.0 with a 5.7 and trying to get it started, but has a very slow crank with a good battery. Starter came off of the 5.0 motor. I removed the distributor in case the timing was too advanced (I heard that somewhere) and no change. At first turn it was cranking fine, but got slower and slower. Any suggestions?

 

too much compression for old crumy starters, I'm replacing mine with an LT1 mini.

 

Update...I was just lookin at the starter. I'm not sure if I wired it up correctly. The starter has the large terminal and on it I put the cable from the battery positive, along with a terminal lug that has two fusible linked wires on it. Then there is a black wire with a small terminal, I placed that on the starter terminal closest to the block. There is one more fusible linked wire that isn't hooked up at all. Hope this isn't too confusing.

 

Try boosting it with another vehicle, and see if it cranks faster. If that works, you probably either need to charge your battery, or replace it. Wouldn't be a bad idea to have your alternator output tested either at that point.

 

Did you put the ground strap back on the motor when the 350 went in?

 

There was a ground strap from the firewall that looked like it was grounding on the header tubes that go to egr, which is why it would crank intermittently. I hooked it up to the head and now it cranks good. Thanks a lot.

 

Quite often when people put in a new motor everything is all painted pretty. People forget that you need to clean off where the grounds go so that you get good engine grounds. I have heard so amny people say that the ground is picked up off the the threads on the bolts but really the case is that the ground is picked up off the surface area of what your tightning it too.

Always sane down to bare metal and be sure that the grounds and also starter mounting surface is clean too. I little bit of diaelectric grease never hurts either.

 

I noticed that if I crank too long, my grounds get really hot, except for the fat negative wire grounded to the engine. I don't think it has direct contact with the block, but grounds through the threads, maybe that's why those grounds get really hot. I'll try that out tomorrow, thanks for the info.
