The nose on the T-5 starter is smaller.
Either one will work on an auto car; but the auto starter won't fit inside the T-5 bell housing.
You'll find that actually, ALOT of the starters that you buy as the "auto" part #, actually have new nosepiece castings that are identical to the T-5 one. That way the casting mfr only has to supply one part # of casting.
Then the parts store and everybody else in the supply chain gets an extra spiff 20% of the time, when they get to hit up the uninformed T-5 owner for some extra change for the differently listed part.
Get the parts store guy to bring you one of each, and look at them. If the nosepieces are the same, then the rest of them is also the same; and just buy the cheaper one.

My 88 was an auto and I put in a T5 and used the same starter (didn't even have to take it when we swapped tranny's).
I may have the one that is compatible with both tranny's though. Mine is quite large too.
